Travel - Air

The closest airport is Nottingham, East Midlands Airport (code EMA), which is about 25-30 minutes from the city centre (when there is no congestion!).  A taxi will cost around £20 one-way, or there is an airport bus, but that is not very frequent (about once an hour).

The airport is served by a conventional scheduled airline (bmi (airline code is BD)) only to Brussels - www.flybmi.com, but there is a network of routes to many European cities via two low-cost (“no-frills”) airlines http://www.bmibaby.com/ and www.easyjet.com which must be booked over the Internet or by ‘phone.

If you cannot use these airlines then the nearest airport is Birmingham (code BMX) (which has a railway station called “Birmingham International”) but railway connections from there are not very quick to Nottingham (about 1.5 – 2 hours).

Travel - Air then Rail through London

Alternatively you may want to fly to London and reach Nottingham by train.Trains leave from London St Pancras station approximately every 30 minutes. St Pancras station is at the King’s Cross Underground (Metro) stop which is served by direct Underground trains to London Heathrow airport (on the Picadilly line). The Heathrow Express train from Heathrow to London is not very convenient for journeys to Nottingham.

London Luton airport is on the London – Nottingham railway line. There are a few direct trains from Luton Airport to Nottingham, otherwise travel from Luton Airport station either to Luton or to Bedford and change to a Nottingham train. London Gatwick airport has a railway station from which you should take a “Thameslink” train to either Luton or Bedford and then change to the Nottingham train. In both cases, if you ask the clerk who sells you the ticket they should be able to tell you from which platform your train departs and at which station you must change trains.

If you are using London Stansted airport it is usually fastest to take the airport express train service to Tottenham Hale, from where you can take the Underground (Metro) (Victoria Line) to the King’s Cross stop. Then the route is as described above from London St. Pancras railway station. At some times of day you can catch a train from Stansted airport without going through London. One change of train is usually required, often at Peterborough. It is not much faster than the route through London, but may be cheaper.

Train tickets vary a lot in price depending on the time of travel, but a return is usually much cheaper than two single tickets. The cheapest tickets will limit the times of the trains you may travel on. 1st class tickets are about 50% more expensive than Standard class tickets and are only of a lot of value when the trains are crowded. Nottingham is about 1.75 hrs from London.

Train times for any UK train service can be found from http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/planmyjourney/time_table/journey_requirements.asp (there are some underline characters in the spaces of this web address).

Preferred Hotel

The preferred hotel for accommodation is as follows. This is different from the Holiday Inn in which the conference sessions take place, and neither is the ‘Holiday Inn, Castle Marina’ (all in Nottingham) so make sure you get the right ‘Holiday-Inn’ !

Express By Holiday Inn - Nottingham City Centre
7 Chapel Quarter, Chapel Bar, Maid Marian Way, Nottingham, NG1 6JS
Phone: +44 115 941 9931.
Fax: +44 115 941 5764
Book On-line: http://www.uk-hotel-accommodation.co.uk/England/hotels/exhinottinghamcitycentre.cfm

This costs just under £60 per night (incl. taxes etc.). There was a slightly reduced price for UNBAR6 delegates, but all the rooms at the preferential rate have now been taken.  Some previous visitors had difficulty booking this direct with the hotel, so you may want to try calling your own country’s Holiday Inn booking service – the telephone number is at http://www.ichotelsgroup.com/h/d/hi/925/en/c/2/content/dec/hi/925/en/cs/resoffice.html .

Bus access from the University

The hotel is close to several bus routes which lead directly from the University. (The single journey price is £1 or 90pence, dependant on the bus company – you must pay on the bus. The ‘90pence bus company’ does not give any change so make sure you have coins. Of course, they will be happy to take more than 90pence if you don’t have any change!). Bus details are at http://www.nottingham.ac.uk/campuses/university-park/directions.phtml?menu=directions&sub=directions . Get off your bus at “City Gate” – the bus descends a hill, turns right and the stop is immediately after the turn, under a building
