How can we help?
We are the trade union which the University of Nottingham has undertaken to consult about any changes affecting your terms and conditions of employment. If anything is about to change, and you wish to have your say about it, you can let us know your views and we will ensure these are taken into account. If we are told of changes that are planned, we ensure our members have information regarding such plans and invite your comments.
Where serious changes are planned, about which there is no clear consensus, we can hold ballots of the members to ensure the majority voice is heard. If the changes planned are held to be unacceptable to our members, we can seek to negotiate with the University to arrive at an acceptable compromise.
If you want your voice to be heard, make sure you are a UCU member!
If you encounter any difficulty in your employment -- for example, if you wish to raise a grievance, or if you become the subject of a complaint -- we can provide support and advice. If you wish us to, we can represent you in any hearings related to such matters; or if you prefer we can simply provide background assistance.
If your difficulty is serious, the national UCU provides a legal aid scheme giving you access to a solicitor (or even a barrister) as necessary.
Any can encounter difficulties -- get the strength of the UCU behind you!
If you are one of a group of people who feel you are being unfairly treated in any way, we can represent you as a group and seek to negotiate improvements to your working conditions. For example, we have helped groups of people on irregular part-time contracts, regarded as "hourly paid" staff to be offered formal part-time University contracts, thus providing them with the proper protection of employment law.
Don't put up with unfair treatment -- let us help you.
Nationally, UCU provides many benefits and facilities such as a legal helpline (covering more than just employment issues). For full details, please see the information on the national web-site.
