Course overview

This course offers the opportunity to explore the ways in which material culture and art are studied. You will explore the theory, methods and practice of archaeology and a range of archaeological periods and themes, while at the same time, fully examining aspects of Western art history and theory. Field work and trips are also part of the course.

Year one

You will be provided with a grounding in both archaeology and art history, including modules on the archaeology of the prehistoric, Roman and medieval periods.

Year two

In addition to core modules in archaeology – Archaeology of Technology and Production, History, Theory and Practice of Archaeology, Medieval Britain and Britain in the Western Roman Empire - you will select more advanced modules in both subjects.

Year three

You will have a choice of advanced modules and write a dissertation in either archaeology or art history.

Skills and careers

You will have an in-depth understanding of the origins and development of archaeology and art history as academic disciplines, as well as a comprehensive appreciation of the historical, social and cultural contexts of interpretation in those areas. You will have developed a deep and comparative knowledge of the archaeology and art history of selected geographic regions and chronological periods, along with the ability to reflect critically on the nature of archaeology and art history as disciplines.

Average starting salary 

The average starting salary for 2009/2010 full-time graduates of the Department of Archeology was £16,666.67 and for graduates of the Department of Art History it was £16,297.31.*
