Course overview

The Foundation Certificate in Arts and Social Sciences is a one-year full-time foundation programme, which provides a suitable route for international students wishing to apply for a bachelors degree in an arts or social sciences subject at The University of Nottingham. It also provides a good grounding for a range of programmes at other universities. The programme is designed primarily for international students whose first language is not English and whose school-leaving qualifications do not allow immediate admission to undergraduate degree programmes in Britain.

The year

Over 50 per cent of the programme is devoted to improving academic oral and written communication, information technology, and study skills. These are developed within a context of discussion about global developments in economics, politics, business, society, media, culture and the environment. Other modules on the programme provide an introduction to the study of media, texts, society and culture. All modules provide work on critical thinking, academic literacy, and communication skills needed for study at undergraduate level.
