- We emphasise self-reflection throughout the learning experience, preparing students for academic and professional progression
Building on a long history of providing flexible, part-time courses, we provide an opportunity for students to seek new skills, professional development and personal enrichment in an environment that is both supportive and friendly but academically challenging.
Our students come from a diverse range of backgrounds and we welcome applicants without formal qualifications as we believe that life experience should count.
The programmes we offer differ from other university undergraduate courses in the way they are delivered, assessed and studied.
We appreciate that it's not always possible to study with so many other family and personal commitments; that's why we've designed the programmes we offer with flexibility in mind. You can "learn as you earn" if you want to study part-time or study full-time if you wish to complete within three years.
Both full-time and part-time students study side by side to gain maximum experience of small-group teaching. We timetable our modules for daytime, evening and weekends to allow you flexibility of attendance.
We don't have exams in any of our programmes. All work is continuously assessed via innovative forms of assessment, ie presentations, reflective journals, essays. Staff teaching on the programme are experienced professionals, committed to helping you achieve your goals.
Courses
We offer four courses :
- • BA (Hons) Humanities (full-time and part-time)
- • BA (Hons) Creative and Professional Writing (full-time and part-time)
- • BA (Hons) Humanistic Counselling Practice/Studies (full-time and part-time)
- • BA (Hons) Fine Art (part-time)
Our innovative, tiered pattern of study rewards achievement at three levels, Certificate, Diploma or Degree, enables you to manage short and long-term study in ways that meet your educational, economic and social needs. By registering on the degree programme, each stage can be taken over one to four years (depending on whether participants study full-time or part-time), but the whole BA has to be completed in a total of eight years (six years for the BA in Humanistic Counselling Practice and BA in Humanistic Counselling Studies).
This flexible pattern of delivery, with taught sessions in the daytime, evenings and at weekends, is designed to suit busy people from all walks of life.
Teaching and learning
Lectures are informal and supported by practical and fieldwork sessions where appropriate. The high proportion of mature students ensures that active discussion plays an important part in small-group classroom sessions where every opportunity is taken to encourage interaction and the exchange of information. Students’ reflections on their own experiences are encouraged as an important part of the learning process. Taught sessions are timetabled for learners who need to incorporate study alongside work and family life – daytime, evening and weekend.
Students in the School of Education can take advantage of first-class facilities on the award-winning Jubilee Campus, and at our Adult Education Centre in Nottingham city centre.
The University of Nottingham fosters a supportive and friendly teaching atmosphere where more than 4,000 part-time students become involved in exciting, interesting and varied accredited and non-accredited courses every year. We have a vibrant international community and welcome students from all over the world.
Location
Courses are held in a variety of locations within the city. The Adult Education Centre is conveniently located on Shakespeare Street, one minute’s walk from the Victoria Centre, and well connected by the NET tram and NCT bus services. The award-winning Jubilee Campus is set on the site of the old Raleigh Factory on Triumph Road, close to Wollaton Park and the Queen’s Medical Centre. Other teaching locations are also used within the East Midlands where considered an appropriate enhancement to the subject.
