Financial support for UK students
Organising your finances is an important part of planning for university. At Nottingham we offer one of the UK’s most generous financial support schemes to ensure our courses are more accessible to students from all backgrounds.
Full-time UK undergraduate students
If you join The University of Nottingham as a new full-time UK undergraduate student in September 2010, you will be charged an annual tuition fee, which was £3,225 in 2009. The only current exceptions to this are courses funded by the Department of Health (1), which are Physiotherapy, Nutrition, Nursing and Midwifery.
You can defer payment of your fees until after you have finished university by applying for a tuition fee loan from the Student Loans Company. You will not need to pay back this loan until you have left university and are earning over £15,000 per year.
If you are interested in studying a second undergraduate degree, your tuition fees may be higher and you will not be eligible for a University bursary or student loan. There are some exceptions to this rule – please contact us for clarification.
Year abroad fees
Students spending their whole year abroad at approved placements within the EU under the Erasmus student-mobility programme are exempt from fees during that year. Students on a year abroad placement not organised through the Erasmus programme will be charged fees at half the normal rate for that year. Students in receipt of a core bursary from the University of Nottingham will receive the full amount of this bursary throughout the 4 years of the course. For entry 2009 the School of Modern Languages and Cultures will offer additional year-abroad bursaries to Modern Language and Cultures students who are not eligible for the Erasmus programme because their course involves residence outside the EU. Please see the School of Modern Language and Cultures for further details.
How can The University of Nottingham support me?
The University of Nottingham offers a very generous package of bursaries to lower-income students studying for their first degree – this generally means students with household incomes below £44,500 (2). These bursaries will be provided as cash payments and will not have to be paid back.
Core bursaries
- You are likely to be eligible for a University of Nottingham core bursary of £1,080 (2) from the University, for each year of your undergraduate degree, if your residual household income (3) is less than £34,500 (2).
- If your residual household income is between £34,500 and £44,500, you are likely to be eligible for a core bursary of between £270 and £1,080 per year. (2)
- You may be eligible for additional bursaries totalling up to around £3,000 per year, depending on your personal circumstances, your academic route into University and where you live. (4) You will know before you start studying whether or not you are eligible.
- If you are a student from the East Midlands, and can satisfy certain criteria, you can apply for a First in the Family Scholarship or an Ethel and Kevin B Malone Scholarship. You can apply for these scholarships before you start studying.
- When you have joined the University, you will find there are specific University funds which you can apply for should you need to, such as the Access to Learning Fund and the Childcare Support Fund.
