Notice the reference to the ‘ways [plural] … economists have tried to understand'. The most basic message of this unit is that economics is not a subject in which there is one single correct answer. This unit will also assist you in developing your ability to use and evaluate economic theory, "

"description": " Water has traditionally been regarded as a free resource in the sense that there is nothing to stop anybody collecting their own supply of water from rainfall. Even water from the public supply is very cheap. Although sand and gravel only cost around £12 a tonne in the UK in 2004 (Argles, 2005), the average of £0.80 per tonne (a cubic metre) for supply of mains water in England and Wales is even cheaper. However, some regions of the world are less fortunate. For example, in Kuwait most fres"

"description": " Table 3 lists the major uranium-producing countries. Currently, Canada (with 29% of global supply in 2003) is the world's largest producer of uranium, followed by Australia (21%), both having increased production since about 1980, whereas production from the USA, France, and South Africa has declined (This section examines the UK's coal industry in a little more detail, to see how the complex interplay of location, economics and politics has led to the rapid demise of an industry that was once at the heart of the UK's economy. Figure 38 shows production and consumption figures for coal mined in the UK since 1945 a"

"title": "5.2.2 The GM Economics Review",
"link": "http://www.open.edu/openlearn/science-maths-technology/science/environmental-science/social-issues-and-gm-crops/content_section_5.2.2",
"description": " Scientists, as might be expected, played a limited role in this review, which was produced by a team dominated by economists. The review sought to evaluate the costs and benefits of commercial development of the GM crops available at that time in the UK. They also looked at possible developments over a 10'15-year period. The members of the team were obliged to recognise the limited ‘evidence-base' available on the costs and benefits of GM crops, covering only a short period oftime.Text
