Getting the most out of searching

When searching for images, a maximum of 400 results are returned.

The sort order is based on how open a licence is that is applied to the media. The specific order is:

  1. Public domain
  2. GPL
  3. Creative commons (based on level of restriction)

The sites that are searched are Flickr and Wikipedia for images, and xpert for sound and video

To help you get the most out of running a search, let's look at an example from the world of poultry by looking at what happened when a search was carried out for Jersey Giants (a breed of chicken).

Searching for "jersey giants" the tool will search for both Jersey and Giants - this means in our search we got a full return of 300 results - but some images were not be specific to our requirements.

Searching for "jersey giant" the tool yielded better results with chickens being returned on the first page.

Being detailed yielded best results, a search for "jersey giant chicken" returned a small amount of results but all were chickens.

Thanks go to Lou McGill for inspiring the Jersey Giants example and for recommending this getting the most out of searching page.
