Introduction to macroeconomics
This is a module framework. It can be viewed online or downloaded as a zip file. As taught in Spring Semester 2010. This module provides an introduction to modern macroeconomic analysis. Macroeconomics is concerned with some of the most pressing and fundamental questions economists can ask, such as: What determines economic growth? Why do economies exhibit expansions ('booms') and contractions ('busts') in output? What drives employment and wages, saving and investment? What causes inflation and

Leader or follower? The future of the chemical industry in Europe
A survey has found that an overwhelming majority of managers of chemical firms in Western Europe hold negative views about new regulations governing the industry. However, according to Baptiste Lebreton, a postdoctoral research fellow at INSEAD, and Luk Van Wassenhove, who holds the Henry Ford chair in manufacturing, the latest EU directive can be used to create value and increase competitive advantage.
JeCo: Combining Program Visualization and Story Weaving
We present a collaborative learning tool for programming, Jeliot Collaboratively or JeCo. Jeliot Collaboratively is a combination of a program visualization tool for Java programs, called Jeliot 3, and a collaborative authoring tool, Woven Stories. We introduce these systems and explain how they can be used in learning. Furthermore, we present future directions in order to support a wider range of use cases with JeCo.
Lifelong learning for the Italian Public Administration: the MarchE-Learning Project
This paper describes a local experience for the development of a framework program to set up a Continuous Learning System for Public Administration employees of Marche Region, in Central Italy. Such program belongs to a greater national program, aimed at modernizing the Italian Public Administration by means of the application of ICTs. This program is also part of Italian participation in the European Unions Lisbon Strategy, aimed at turning Europe into one of the most competitive knowledge-ba
A Hierarchy of Ontologies for Didactics-Enhanced E-learning
Ontologies are a fundamental concept of the Semantic Web envisioned by Tim Berners-Lee [1]. Together with explicit representation of the semantics of data for machine-accessibility such domain theories are the basis for intelligent next generation applications for the web and other areas of interest [2]. Their application for special aspects within the domain of e-learning is often proposed to support the increasing complexity ([3], [4], [5], [6]). So they can provide a better support for course
A Programming by Demonstration Authoring Tool
for Model-Tracing Tutors
Model-tracing tutors have consistently been among the most effective class of intelligent learning environments. Across a number of empirical studies, these tutors have shown students can learn the tutored domain better or in a shorter amount of time than traditionally taught students (Anderson et al., 1990). Unfortunately, the creation of these tutors, particularly the production system component, is a time-intensive task, requiring knowledge that lies outside the tutored domain. This outside k
When less is sometimes more: Optimal learning conditions are required for schema acquisition from mu
While it is usually claimed that multiple examples for the illustration of problem categories are a necessary prerequisite for schema acquisition, there is a lack of conclusive empirical evidence supporting this claim. Moreover, there are findings indicating that carefully designed one-example conditions may allow for profitable processes of example comparison as well. In line with this reasoning, we present an experiment that builds up on a series of studies conducted by Quilici and Mayer (1
Contextualizing Discussions in Distance Learning Systems
In distance learning systems, communication tools are rarely integrated into learning activities, which does not encourage their use. The main goal of our work is to mitigate this lack of integration. Our aim is to bring the discussion activities closer to the learning activities, i.e. to situations to which the discussions must ideally relate to in order to promote learning between students. Thus, we suggest two models of forum which are contextual and based on a structuring of discussions resp
Advanced video technologies to support collaborative learning in school education and
beyond
The aim of the paper is to characterize two new advanced video technology software systems developed for uses in collaborative learning (DIVER and HyperVideo2), and how they extend the paradigms of video use in classrooms today. The rationale for and characteristics of these tools are described, and early experiences with their use are characterized.
Beyond Amplification: Using the Computer to Reorganize Mental Functioning
Computers are classically viewed as amplifiers of cognition. An alternative conceptualization is offered of computer as reorganizer of mental functioning. Software analyses illuminate the advantages of the latter approach for new visions of the potential cognitive benefits of computers. A new result emerges: Because the cognitive technologies we invent serve as instruments of cultural redefinition (shaping who we are by changing, not just amplifying, what we do), defining educational values beco
Learning Design Engines as Remote Control to Learning Support Environments.
Context:
Chapter 5 of the Learning Design book describes the operational model of a learning design
engine based on the concept of finite automata with output alphabet. We rely on this event
concept to include pre-existing learning tools in flexibe and rich learning designs.
Contribution:
We sketch an approach for the integration of complex learning environments in learning
designs. Interactive learning support environments, such as argumentation or modelling
tools are pre-existent and have a hi
Organisational patterns for e-learning centres
In this paper we explore the notion of using organisational patterns in educational design for the development of e-learning centres. We are using patterns to discuss some of the key aspects concerning the implementation of an e-learning centre within an institution, with an emphasis on the purposes and pedagogical principles that will help to successfully support such an initiative. The research approach which informed our pattern development work includes use of a qualitative survey of a set o
Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Preschool Immunizations: United States, 1996–2001
Objectives. We examined current racial/ethnic differences in immunization coverage rates among US preschool children.
Methods. Using National Immunization Survey data from 1996 through 2001, we compared vaccination coverage rates between non-Hispanic White, non-Hispanic Black, Hispanic, and Asian preschool children.
Results. During the 6-year study period, the immunization coverage gap between White and Black children widened by an average of 1.1% each year, and the gap between White and Hispa
