AVOCAAD - A First Step Towards Distance Learning?
In the industrial world knowledge is developed very fast. As most countries are depending on employees with a high level of knowledge and skills the term ?Life Long Learning? has been formulated and the concept is more and more accepted. Institutions of higher education are more and more involved in creating supplementary education more independent of time and place. Distance learning was originally carried out by ordinary mail, which was slow but might then have been the only solution for peopl
MODELAGEM GEOM?TRICA NOS EST?GIOS INICIAIS DE APRENDIZAGEM DA PR?TICA PROJETUAL EM ARQUITETURA. GEOM
This work invests on delimitation of a Geometric Modeling study program directed to students at the initial stages of Architecture. It is considered that the studies promote a qualified control of the form based on recognition of parameters which define it, moreover it also allows the enlargement of the students geometric vocabulary, important to the architectural design activities. In this way, the program advances on the appropriation of new concepts which surround the investigations on archit

The didactic activity related to the teaching of Perspective has been revised considering the possibility offered by the computing tools. This review must evaluate the potentialities of concepts and procedures related to the traditional techniques as sources for architectural graphics expression, before suggesting its suppression. It is possible to improve the accuracy and quickness controlling the visualization parameters of three-dimensional models. On the other hand, it is necessary to explor
Reinterpretation or replacement? The effects of the information and communication technologies on ur
The timid question ?Virtual spaces or real places?? forms the core of many debates within the spatial sciences addressing theconsequences of the rapid development of information and communication technologies1 on existing spatial structures. So far several opinions rival each other for the interpretation of current and the prediction of future spatial developments. The spacelessness ofcomputer networks and the possibility to transmit data in real-time have lead visionaries to predict a far-reach
What Happened to Collaborative Design?
In this paper we present the results of a comprehensive literature survey on the development of collaborative design. We reviewed 324 papers on collaborative design, taken from various sources (conferences, journals, and PhD-theses). We grouped the papers based on common themes, and in that way derived a classification of themes through the last 25 years (1983-2008). Each category is described, its development, and key publications are identified.
Feature clusters for online recognition of graphic units in drawings
Automated recognition of sketch drawings can provide the means for a natural interface between the designer and a design support system. Sketch drawing recognition is knowledge-intensive in the sense that the system must know what to look for in a drawing. In earlier work, we identified 24 different types of representations, termed graphic units. For recognition of graphic units we combine a multi-agent approach and online recognition. Each agent is specialised for one graphic unit. It continuou
A Religious and Cultural Clash or a Tribal Showdown - Analysing the Danish Cartoons Crisis.
Length: 25 minutes
The publication of cartoons satirising the Prophet Muhammad in the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten has triggered violent protests across the world. The cartoons, which have been reprinted in a number of European papers, have angered Muslims and focussed attention on the fragile relationships between Islamic countries and the West.
Do the cartoons represent a fundamental difference in the religious and cultural values of the two communities or is the current crisis the l
Responding to Water Scarcity
Growers in the UK are having to get used to managing with less water. Changing climate patterns mean that techniques long established in Southern Europe are now being adapted for use further north.
Dr Jim Monaghan (Harper Adams University College) is leading research at Warwick HRI on Dynamic Fertigation, an irrigation system that not only saves water and fertilizer but also automatically respond to five day weather forecasts.

Sustainable Processes and Energy
Sustainable process and energy engineering is one of the most important engineering developments in the 21st century. But what precisely do we mean by it?
Industrial processes and energy systems are sustainable if they promote development that 'meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own demands'. But achieving sustainability in the industrial realm will not be easy and can only be accomplished by overcoming formidable technical challe

Happiness, economics and society
David Cameron, leader of the Conservative Party, recently announced that we should focus on happiness and general well being rather than economic growth. The statement raised questions about how we live our lives, the culture of consumerism and whether 'more stuff' actually leads to better lives.
Research by Professor Andrew Oswald has questioned the supposed link between economic growth and happiness and indicated that it may not be in our national interest to continue our focus on increased
Are you getting enough sleep?
Our lives are getting busier and busier and it can often seem that there is not enough time in the day to get everything done. For many of us this means we are cutting down on the amount of time we are asleep. There is plenty of evidence, however, that in doing so we are increasing the risk of serious health problems, such as obesity and heart disease, as well as the problems associated with daytime sleepiness.
