Laboratory Investigations With C-FernTM Ceratopteris richardii
This series of laboratory exercises can be used to enhance existing labs focused on various aspects of plant biology, or to develop new laboratory-based courses at the undergraduate level.
Build Your Own Insect Trap
Students design and construct a device to trap insects that are present in the area around their school. The objective of the exercise is to ask the right design questions and to conduct the right tests to determine if the trap works properly.
Design a Bicycle Helmet
The goal of the activities is for students to understand the basics of engineering associated with safety products. Using a bicycle helmet helps to protect the brain and neck during a crash. In order to do this effectively, helmets must have some sort of crushable material to absorb the shock of a collision and a strap system to ensure that the protection stays in place. The exact design of the helmet will depend on the needs and specifications of the user. In this activity students will be intr

Michell Trusses
This report summarizes work done as part of the Michell Trusses PFUG under Rice University's VIGRE program. VIGRE is a program of Vertically Integrated Grants for Research and Education in the Mathematical Sciences under the direction of the National Science Foundation. A PFUG is a group of Postdocs, Faculty, Undergraduates and Graduate students formed around the study of a common problem. In this PFUG, we study cost minimizing trusses. We ask what is the structure, constructed of bars and cable
La pollution atmosphérique et les aéro-contaminants
Journée Santé Environnement
Quelques risques environnementaux reconnus
ISPED, Université Victor Segalen Bordeaux 2
Il est désormais bien connu que la pollution atmosphérique, mélange complexe de polluants particulaires et de polluants gazeux, est une source de problèmes plus ou moins graves de santé, affect
Introduction to Concise Signal Models
This collection reviews fundamental concepts underlying the use of concise models for signal processing. Topics are presented from a geometric perspective and include low-dimensional linear, sparse, and manifold-based signal models, approximation, compression, dimensionality reduction, and Compressed Sensing.
Mitochondrial DNA from Lumbriculus variegatus: Isolation and Restriction Digest Analysis
In this activity, mitochondria are isolated from the California blackworm, Lumbriculus variegatus, by homogenization and differential centrifugation. A modified plasmid miniprep procedure (alkaline lysis) is then used to isolate DNA from these mitochondria. Single and double enzyme restriction digests of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) are analyzed by agarose gel electrophoresis. Sizes of mtDNA restriction fragments are estimated from gel results and are used to determine the total size of the L. vari

What is heritage?
What is heritage? This unit will introduce you to the concept of heritage and its critical study, exploring the role of heritage in both past and contemporary societies.
6 And action!
This unit explores the role of digital media as a teaching tool, focussing on video in particular. we will examine the process of how you can start to use digital video in the classroom, and how to manage your project from objective setting, through story boards and filming, to assesing the success of your project.
Behind the Scenes: Landing the Soyuz
06/20/2011 -- NASA Public Affairs Officer Josh Byerly talks to ground support personnel and mission officials in Russia and Kazakhstan as they prepare for the landing of Expedition 27 on May 23, 2011. Crew members Dmitry Kondratyev, Cady Coleman and Paolo Nespoli returned home aboard the Soyuz TMA-20 spacecraft while space shuttle Endeavour and the STS-134 crew were still docked to the International Space Station.

"Learning and Memory: Activity-Controlled Gene Expression in the Nervous System, Fall 2009"
"The mammalian brain easily outperforms any computer. It adapts and changes constantly. Most importantly, the brain enables us to continuously learn and remember. What are the molecular mechanisms that lead to learning and memory? What are the cellular roles that activity-regulated gene products play to implement changes in the brain? How do nerve cells, their connections (synapses), and brain circuits change over time to store information? We will discuss the molecular mechanisms of neuronal pla
EE 120 - Lecture 27 - Signals and Systems
Structure and Interpretation of Systems and Signals - Spring 2007. This course is an introduction to mathematical modeling techniques used in the design of electronic systems. An important keyword here is "mathematical." Subjects we will cover include continous and discrete signals, with applications to audio, images, video, communications, and control; State-based models, beginning with automata and evolving to LTI systems; Frequency domain models for signals and frequency response for systems,
