5 minute highlights of the speech given by Xavier Rolet, CEO of the London Stock Exchange, at London Business School's Up Close speaker event on 10th February 2010.
Gregarines are members of the Phylum Apicomplexa that parasitize invertebrates. All of the Apicomplexans are parasitic and include some of medical and veterinary importance (e.g., malaria). Gergarines may be safely studied in highly parasizited hosts such as earthworms and mealworms that are readily available from bait shops and pet stores. Various life cycle stages are easily visible under the dissecting microscope in student laboratories.
In this computer-assisted exercise first-year students explore the fundamental concept of allometry: the study of size and its consequences. Students examine the relationship between size and shape and learn how to quantify changes in proportions. They investigate how North American mammals of various sizes change proportions to compensate for changes of surface area and volume. Interactive computer programs aid each student in calculating standard dimensions from an Audubon illustration, proces
Students design and carry out an experimental procedure that will allow them to determine the effect of an experimental variables on pulse rate, blood pressure, respiratory volumes, or other related cardiopulmonary functions such as rate of breathing.
A laboratory to demonstrate the use of the "Darwin 2000" website to train undergraduates to use online molecular databases and analysis tools, fostering their understanding of how genes and proteins evolve.
Students follow the steps of the engineering design process to create their own ear trumpet devices (used before modern-day hearing aids), including testing them with a set of reproducible sounds. They learn to recognize different pitches, and see how engineers must test designs and materials to achieve the best amplifying properties.
Students explore the outermost planets of our solar system: Saturn, Uranus and Neptune. They also learn about characteristics of Pluto and its interactions with Neptune. Students learn a little about the history of space travel as well as the different technologies that engineers develop to make space travel and scientific discovery possible.

"Why Doesn't Everybody Care About the Environment?"
Students pretend they are agricultural engineers during the colonial period and design a miniature plow that will cut through a "field" of soil. Students are introduced to the engineering design process and learn of several famous historical figures who contributed to the design of the plow.

Both science and non-science concentrators talk about the excitement of learning applied science principles through cooking and being taught by famous chefs from around the world.
This Career Clip features Tonya Dean, Production Manager at the Lehigh Valley Syrup Plant for Coca-Cola. She is responsible for ensuring that the operations run smoothly and that all customers orders get completed. Her best advice was to take care of the people and the work will take care of itself. Making sure that they are taken care of and that they have the knowledge and materials to complete tasks, the work will get done.
A general knowledge quiz about native Irish trees by Una Hurley
Sea lions are vertebrates with both backbones and ribs. The backbone is a gliding joint, allowing the animal to be flexible, while the ribs main function is to protect it's inner organs. The short tail helps to balance the animal while walking on land.
This patient education program reviews urinary tract anatomy and symptoms to explain what an intravenous pyelogram (IVP) involves, including the benefits and risks of this procedure. This is a MedlinePlus Interactive Health Tutorial from the National Library of Medicine, designed and developed by the Patient Education Institute.
Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune are all of the outer planets in our solar system. There is a planetoid called Pluto out there too! Learn more about our outer planets with this slide show from StudyJams. Vibrant images are set to music while information is written under each photo. A short, self-checking quiz is also included with this link.
Revise and reinforce some of the concepts of algebra.
