Learning As Synaptic Change
This module presents researchers investigating the structural changes involved in learning. Research conducted at the Pasteur Institute in Paris shows that the learning process involves the formation of new brain connections and the elimination of others. Other researchers dispel the myth of brain loss in aging, present evidence of changes at the cellular level, and revi
Visual Information Processing: Elementary Concepts
This module depicts the original pioneering research on how the brain’s visual systems transmit and encode information. Researchers at the University of California, Berkeley, present their work on the visual cortex of the monkey using x-ray images. Two Nobel laureates also recount their serendipitous discovery of “feature detector” cells in the striate cortex that

A systematic review of research evidence on effective school-based partnership in ITT using the EPPI protocol.
RHINOs: Really Here In Name Only (March 2001)
This TTA legacy document reports on a small-scale research project that examined disaffection among a group of students attending a High School in Norwich.
General Teaching Council for England: Research for Teachers
The 'Research for Teachers' (formerly 'Research of the Month') section of the GTCE website contains research summaries aimed at supporting teachers in utilising the implications of research in their classrooms.
(R&DA 25) The Development of Professional Knowledge for Teaching Historical Enquiry and Historical I
This project in the Oxford Internship Scheme investigated trainee teachers’ professional knowledge for teaching historical enquiry and historical interpretation. The study found that discovering students’ preconceptions of enquiry and interpretation was essential. The partnership generated a list of shared objectives. Supported by a TDA Research and Development Award.
Ecosystems
Scientists from the Smithsonian Center for Tropical Research document the astounding abundance of diversity in tropical rainforests to discover why so many species coexist that are competing for the same resources. In North America, the Yellowstone Wolf Reintroduction project explores why removing just one species dramatically changed the distribution of plants and anima
(R&DA 26) The Development of Professional Knowledge in ITE for Teaching Sustainable Development thro
This study investigated subject knowledge for teaching in Geography and also dealt with training for teaching controversial issues. Teaching Sustainable Development provides challenges for students because it is contested, value laden and provisional. Supported by a TDA Research and Development Award.
Effective Classroom Organisation in Primary Schools: Mathematics
This resource is a TRIPS summary of research which questions the practice of setting by ability in lower Key Stage 2 mathematics lessons. It aims to evaluate the impact of setting, as opposed to mixed ability grouping, on children’s attainment in mathematics.
The Arts in Every Classroom: Historical References in the Arts
Learner Team members and students examine costume designs for Parade, focusing on how the designs help convey character. They interpret works by painter René Magritte and choreographer Alwin Nikolais, discovering influences on the creators of Quidam. They also conduct research into the history of street performance and report their findings, in the role of art historian.
Physical education Differentiation
Physical education Differentiation I am researching inclusive PE lessons and the need for differentiation for the inclusion of all learners. I also need to link this to the role of competition in a inclusive PE learning environment. My research is focused on key stage 1/2 and PE lessons.
Physical education Sport
I'm planning to do a research project on physical education at primary school, and how much participation children do of physical sport ouside of school. Where can I find information? 7-11 year olds , key stage 2 , P.E
Physical education Mixed sex
Is there any recent research into mixed sex physical education lessons? I was looking to see if this had any effect on disaffection.
The Microbial Universe
The world of microorganisms is a dynamic one, and all other life forms depend on microbial metabolic activity. Recent genetic research has uncovered only about one percent of the microbes that remain to be discovered.
Speaking/listening Primary
Speaking/listening Primary Where can I find research into speaking and listening skills for KS2 children? I am doing a child study as part of my PGCE and need some research into improving speaking and listening skills.
How classroom talk supports reading comprehension
This research summary, published on the DfES TRIPS (The Research Informed Practice) site, underlines the importance of high quality classroom talk in developing reading comprehension with pupils aged 6-16. Most of the findings will be very familiar to teachers and trainees conversant with good practice in literacy teaching, and the recommendations of the National Strategies, but there are some useful insights into the specifics of effective teacher support which would be of value to ITT trainees
The Temperature and Gas Laws The ups and downs of scientific research are reflected in Boyle's experiments, and Charles' investigations. Hot new discoveries about the behaviors of gases make the connection between temperature and heat, and raise the possibility of an absolute scale.
Parental Involvement in raising the Achievement of Primary School Pupils: why bother?
This is a digest, on the DCSF Standards website, of an evaluation of research concerning parental involvement in raising literacy and numeracy standards in Primary schools. The original research study, sponsored by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, was carried out at Oxford University between 1992 and 1997. Researchers Edwards and Warin evaluated some of the findings and published a paper in 1999.
Guangming Smart-city: A New Chinese City
By 2010 it is anticipated that half of China’s population will have moved from the countryside to the cities. The Chinese Government has recently presented Dongtan, near Shanghai, as their ecological showcase to the United Nations World Urban Forum, but what will tomorrow’s new Chinese city be?
Our key research concern was to design a more sustainable social and economic community and strike a balance between modernization and environmental preservation. The “ecological life-style” is a
City history and multi-scale spatial master-planning
The UK and Chinese Governments have agreed at the highest level to collaborate through the China-UK Sustainable Development Dialogue on research and knowledge exchange to help ensure that the way we develop our cities will become truly sustainable. As a part of that initiative a group of related networks has been funded by the UK’s Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council, inspired by the Dongtan Eco-city development north of Shanghai.
