A study by Martin Smith of the University of Toronto and Jean-Bernard Caron of the Royal Ontario Museum sheds new light on a previously unclassifiable 500 million-year-old squid-like carnivore known as Nectocaris pteryx. The new interpretation became possible with the discovery of 91 new fossils that were collected from the Burgess Shale site in the UNESCO World Heritage Canadian Rocky Mountain Parks, BC. Here the 20-year seasonal surface temperature trend for the spring is shown over the Arctic region. This animation shows the warming and cooling regions in steps from the regions of least change to the areas of greatest change. Blue hues indicate cooling regions; red hues depict warming. Light regions indicate less change while darker regions indicate more. The temperature scale used ranges from -0.4 to +0.4 degrees Celsius in increments of .02 degrees. (See color bar below)

18 Year Old Receives Heartmate II at MUSC
18 year old Asha Wilson's heart failure had reached a point where she was bedridden and dangerously close to dying. In April of 2010, she became the youngest person to receive a HeartMate II device at the MUSC Heart and Vascular Center. Now she is home from the hospital living a normal life and hoping to get a heart transplant.

Texas Tech University Chancellor Kent Hance introduces the first edition of Leading the Way: A Year In Review, an annual publication highlighting the great things happening throughout the Texas Tech University System.
Donations are on track to surpass the $100 million mark for four straight years, improving the system's national endowment ranking.
Texas Tech is also closing in on $45 million in restricted research expenditures as it nears reaching Tier One research status.
