"Sonnet 4 - Unthrifty Loveliness, Why Dost Thou Spend..." by William Shakespeare (poetry reading)
Shakespeare was fond of puns. At the time this was written, the word "spend" at the end of the first line had a double meaning. It meant to ejaculate. They had the idea that the body made only a limited supply of procreative fluid - and that it deteriorated in quality with expenditure. The poem advises the young man to ration his usage of semen to create an heir and pass on his beauty - and not use it "for having traffic with thyself alone".
It's interesting that they were aware that se

Also known as Finger Buster and often confused with Willie Lion Smith's Finger Buster. Note: Music rolls or piano rolls were almost never played or recorded by a pianist. Even when the artist was part of the process, arrangers, some skilled, some not, edited the rolls heavily and limited by factory rules and equipment. Performed and interpreted on my p

"Attack" by Siegfried Sassoon (poetry reading)
AT dawn the ridge emerges massed and dun
In the wild purple of the glow'ring sun,
Smouldering through spouts of drifting smoke that shroud
The menacing scarred slope; and, one by one,
Tanks creep and topple forward to the wire.
The barrage roars and lifts. Then, clumsily bowed
With bombs and guns and shovels and battle-gear,
Men jostle and climb to meet the bristling fire.
Lines of grey, muttering faces, masked with fear,
They leave their trenches, going over the top,
While time tick

Science Bulletins: Earth's Green Carbon Machine
The seasonal growth of plants—both on land and in the ocean—is one of the most striking patterns visible on Earth from space. This green "pulse" of life is intimately connected with the planet's carbon cycle and changing climate. In this data visualization, watch plants grow and die with the seasons and learn about the resulting effects on carbon and climate. Visitors to AMNH may view the visualization in the Hall of Biodiversity until January 16, 2012. For background information, education
