I begin by introducing my three major teachers, and go on to outline the background of the series: early attempts at histories of Chinese painting, photographing and cataloguing projects carried out in the 1960s-70s, changing ideas about how art history should be constructed and written. I introduce Ernst Gombrich as a model for the kind of art-historical narrative I will attempt, but also emphasize the strong tradition of critical and historical writing in China that underlies my account. Highlights from Aron Ralston's (E'97) Keynote Speech
Aron Ralston (E'97) delivered the keynote address at Carnegie Mellon University's 114th commencement on May 15, 2011. Ralston's heroic story of survival is the subject of the film "127 Hours." Pinned by a half-ton boulder in a Utah canyon for nearly a week, Ralston turned to the analytical problem solving skills he acquired at Carnegie Mellon University to survive and eventually free himself.

The UK's 2011 Budget for Growth put emphasis on encouraging small start ups and small businesses. Is it likely to succeed? David Molian gives his perspective, drawing on 24 years' experience of working with growth businesses. He cautions the need for a long time horizon, with only a small proportion of start-ups succeeding in creating significant growth for the UK economy.
