The A.W. Mellon Educational and Charitable Trust operated as a financial supporter of the arts, culture, and education from 1930 to 1980. The collection documents the internal business operations of the Trust and its relation with the organizations, institutions, and programs that it funded.
This collection is composed of Joan Miller's research on the "early historical development" of Hazelwood, Pennsylvania. The collection contains information from United States census, photographs, the 1870 Hazelwood Blue Book, maps, and church and community directories. The collection also contains a large amount of research produced on early computers.
Ralph Waldo Tillotson (1885-1964) was a Socialist Party member and an active participant in the organized labor movement in Erie, Pennsylvania in the first half of the 20th century. This collection contains a small sample of his correspondence, campaign material, and Socialist Party information, newspaper clippings about labor events and elections, some Tillotson family genealogical research done by a relative, and a book about the history of Erie County on one roll of microfilm.
Although words followed by two consonants that are not a mute and liquid, have a long syllable (the consonants disconnect,one of the pair falling into each syllable), in some cases, the vowel of the first syllable is also pronounced as a long vowel.
Many dictionaries fail to distinguish between vowel length and syllable length. In poetry,macrons are used only to marksyllable length. Many reputable Latin dictionaries only concern themselves with the metrical values, not the pronounced word.
