Math Literature Connections: Two of Everything
Two of Everything by Lily Toy Hong recounts a Chinese folk tale. The farmer finds a magic pot which doubles everything that is put into it. This humorous story is a great introduction to function machines and input/output tables as teachers make the transition to the "doubling pot" and recording information in an input/output table.

Instructional Strategies for Mental Math
These strategies support active student participation in math lessons and allow teachers to assess the developing proficiency levels of all students in the class by walking around to monitor student responses. These strategies are especially effective during the Mental Math part of an Everyday Mathematics lesson.

Genres in Literature
Students will utilize several handheld applications to gain a better understanding of the term “genre” and how it relates to the various literature selections they experience as readers.
Exploring Literature and Weather through Chirps
In this lesson students will learn, explore and experience using crickets' chirps to calculate temperature. Students will also read both fiction and nonfiction stories and books about crickets.
Comparison of Multicultural Literature
Students will read three different versions of "Twas the Night Before Christmas" and complete a comparison activity.
Students will then write and illustrate their own modern version of the poem.
Reacting to Literature
Students will do two activities relating to a book that they enjoyed. They will all review the book using BooksLog. Half of the students will then use Sketchy to illustrate a key action scene in the book. The other half of the students will use PicoMap to create a web describing three main characters in the book.
Palms and Literature
Students will use a variety of Palm applications to enhance their comprehension and understanding of the Civil War through the literature selection Charley Skedaddle. They will also work on building vocabulary.
