1.2 Continuity and change

Religions generally go to a great deal of trouble to stress how consistent, how changeless, how solid they are, but change is, in fact, an observable and constant factor in religion. At a personal level, for example, older Catholics who grew up having to eat fish on Friday and ‘knowing’ that cremation was forbidden to them are aware of that. Such ‘unchanging certainties’ have changed a great deal over the years. It is therefore useful to look both at how a religion develops over time

How do you take a picture?  Hopefully not like this!  A fantastic example of a Rube Goldberg.  A Rube Goldberg machine is any device that is a deliberately over-engineered or overdone machine to perform a very simple task.  This would also be a great introduction for a lesson on simple machines or for the photography club.  (04:13)

4.1 Three approaches to global environmental change

How many ordinary people know that sustainability is the concept that is meant to save the world? How many people who believe in the concept are convinced that it can capture the public imagination? The answer to both questions is ‘not many’. It is easy to lay the charge that the idea has been much talked about in some closed circles, but has no purchase on the public imagination and is little practised. This section takes the three different approaches to global environmental change desc

3.2 Ancient time

To help registered students keep an overview of ancient chronology, the A219 course team have developed online timelines. By the end of the course, registered students should have their own customised timelines; and obviously editing the timeline is also a good way of collecting and

4.3 Diagrams for connectivity

Relationship diagrams offer one way of putting more order into your understanding of a situation. Each element of a situation is named in an oval and lines between ovals indicate that there are relationships between the particular elements – but no more than this!

Systems maps are another way of developing one's understanding of a situation. Systems maps are essentially ‘structure’ diagrams. Each element or sub-system is contained in a circle or oval and a line is d

1.2.6 Defining global markets

Global markets for manufactured goods, as opposed to, say, primary commodities such as oil and timber, arose largely in the second half of the twentieth century as trade between countries intensified. The lowering of transport costs and the relative fall in trade barriers enabled firms in one country to compete with a domestic rival in another. The supply of manufactured goods across the globe as a result of worldwide demand, principally from the affluent economies, thus heightened competitio

Ethanol metabolites

The suggestion that acetaldehyde accumulation is involved in hangovers is largely due to the observation that high concentrations of acetaldehyde in the blood give rise to toxic effects which resemble hangovers (rapid pulse, sweating, nausea, etc.).
