Block perimeter applet
This applet is designed to help students understand the meaning of perimeter for regular and irregular shapes. Square boxes can be dragged to the applet's screen to form a shape. The area is determined by the number of boxes in the shape. The perimeter is found by counting the number of unattached sides. Students can check their answer by clicking the Show Perimeter button. Directions explaining how to link the boxes are included. Copyright 2005 Eisenhower National Clearinghouse

Contemporary Perspectives in Distal Radius Fracture Fixation
Wrist fractures, those injuries involving the distal radius, the distal ulna, and the joints about these bones, are some of the most commonly sustained fractures in any age group. With such a large number of injuries encountered, the effort to return patients to their normal activities has driven remarkable changes in treatment methods. UW physicians Matt Lyons, Jeffrey Friedrich, Douglas Hanel, and Jerry Huang discuss the history of wrist fractures and how the recently updated AAOS guidelines a
The Whyfiles Spring Break Edition: Bad News on Skin Cancer
You are unlikely to meet anyone these days who has never heard that UV radiation from the sun can cause skin cancer, but scientific inquiry into this unfortunate fact is far from over. This Whyfiles feature offers an in-depth explanation of the sun-skin cancer connection, beginning with a highly readable, explanatory introduction to UV radiation, forms of skin cancer, and the ozone layer. This background information sets the groundwork for the next section, an intriguing look at epidemiological

3: Testing the limits
In this unit we explore questions of access to community services. To make what might be quite a dry task more challenging we use a fictionalised case study of two people for whom access to community services is particularly problematic. Jim and Marianne are both long-term heroin addicts. Additional problems associated with their addiction are homelessness and physical illness. Their situation raises both practical questions, about how services can be accessed, and moral questions, about entitle

7.5.2 Title Being able to understand and use a range of numerical, graphical, algebraic and other mathematical techniques is a central feature of number skills. Use the following list to help you identify the areas you may need to work on. Will you need to: make observations, measurements, and express and combine the units of measurement correctly? read and interpret scale drawings, graphs, tables and charts? If so, do you need to learn about the
2.2 Present-day energy use
Energy resources are essential for any society, be it one dependent on subsistence farming or an industrialised country. There are many different sources of energy, some well-known such as coal or petroleum, others less so, such as tides or the heat inside the Earth. Is nuclear power a salvation or a nightmare? This unit provides background information to each resource, so that you can assess them for yourself.
