This Land Is Your Land, This Land Is My Land
In this activity, students will review and evaluate the ways land is covered and used in their local community. They will also consider the environmental effects of the different types of land use. Students will act as community planning engineers to determine where to place a new structure that will have the least affect on the environment.
How Should Our Gardens Grow?
In this lesson, students will learn about types of land use by humans and evaluate the ways land is used in their local community. They will also consider the environmental effects of the different types of land use. Students will assume the role of community planning engineers and will create a future plan for their community. (Note: Teachers will need to check out the following book from the local or school library: Durell, Ann, Craighead George, Jean, and Paterson, Katherine. The Big Book For
Renewable Energy
In this lesson, students are introduced to the types of renewable energy resources. They are involved in activities to help them understand the transformation of energy (solar, water and wind) into electricity. Students explore the different roles of engineers working in renewable energy fields.
Identifying Coordination Agents for Collaborative Telelearning
This paper deals with identifying roles for coordination agents in a future collaborative telelearning environment. The current practice of students participating in a net-based simulation marketing game on-campus, is studied with an eye on designing a future collaborative telelearning environment where this same net-based simulation game will be central. The work described in this paper is situated within the theoretical foundations of computer supported collaborative learning (CSCL). In partic
Enhancing a Web-Based Distance-Learning Curriculum with Dedicated Tools
The work presented in this paper aims at supporting students involved in a Web-based distance-learning curriculum. For such a purpose, the Saafir system proposes students with different tools that support them in their appropriation of this curriculum, e.g. visualization of the curriculum from different points of view or construction of individual projects by putting different items of the curriculum into relation. In order to allow using Saafir with already existing distance-learning Websites,
An approach to distance learning curriculum appropriation
The work presented aims at supporting distance learning students in their appropriation of a curriculum. We propose an approach that consists in helping students to construct individual projects. We dissociate different aspects (planning, evaluation and regulation) that can be useful for this purpose, propose a technological approach (epiphyte system, ontology-based model) and example of tools currently provided by the Saafir framework.

The US Geological Survey Volcano Hazards Program website presents its objectives "to advance the scientific understanding of volcanic processes and to lessen the harmful impacts of volcanic activity." The public can explore information on volcano monitoring, warning schemes, and emergency planning. Students and educators can find out about the types, effects, location, and history of volcano hazards. The website offers recent online volcano reports and maps, volcano factsheets, videos, and a pho
Exploratory Test of an Automated Knowledge Elicitation and Organization Tool
his paper combines the contents of two papers that were presented at the ITS 98 conference one focusing on knowledge representation (Shute, 1998) and the other describing a knowledge elicitation tool (Shute, Torreano, & Willis, 1998). There are three main purposes of this paper. First, as a means to stress instructional and assessment implications of different knowledge types, we will briefly overview knowledge representations. Second, we describe a novel cognitive tool designed to aid in knowle

Flexibility in macro-scripts for computer-supported collaborative learning
In the field of computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL), scripts are designed to support collaboration among distant learners or co-present learners whose interactions are (at least partially) mediated by a computer. The rationale of scripts is to structure collaborative learning processes in order to trigger group interactions that may be rare in free collaboration. Fixing the degree of coercion is a delicate design choice: too rigid scripts would spoil the richness of collaborative in
Decentralized Service Deployment for Collaborative Environments
In this paper we present the design of a system which allows service deployment in a small-sized group of computers distributed through the Internet. These groups are formed by users who share a common interest, and voluntarily yield their own resources for the achievement of the collaborative activities of the group. Having enough resources contributed by the members of the group, our system guarantees service availability and the fact that the deployment and execution of the services is carrie

An important concern facing electronics designers is heat dissipation. Especially in laptop computers and server farms, overheating can be a major problem. ElectronicsCooling is a free, quarterly publication that provides "practical information to the reader that relates to cooling of today's electronics." Every article since the magazine's debut in 1995 can be viewed from this site. Common topics are packaging, thermal design, and technical data related to many types of electronics. Contributio
Open Wide and Trek Inside
This site examines the mouth and its various purposes, different types of teeth and their functions, bacteria that live in the mouth, and the processes of tooth decay and oral disease. The site includes activities and a teachers guide, which are designed for use by elementary school teachers.
Essential Science for Teachers: Earth and Space Science
In-depth interviews with children that uncover their ideas about the topic at hand.,Throughout the video the student holds on to an idea that continents drifted apart because they were pushed by ocean currents. This video provides an example of how the interviewer conforonted the student with her drawing to have her think whether her personal theory made sense. He asked her how ocean currents could cause drift if there was no ocean, as seen on her diagram of the large land mass. When she tries t
Internet Scout Project
This remarkable Web site contains descriptions and animations of nineteen different kinds of engines. Engine types include internal combustion, steam, and sterling engines, and each page shows how the piston, crankshaft, and other components move together to generate power. The animations demonstrate the processes of intake, compression, and exhaust. Some of the featured engines have more detailed descriptions than others, and oftentimes, a brief account of the engine's history is included. One

HIV Problem Space
In this problem space, you will have access to the following materials: background information on HIV/AIDS, the original Markham et al. reference and other primary literature, viral sequences from each visit of each patient, patients' CD4 counts at each visit, phylogenetic trees of the virus sequences from each patient, a phylogenetic tree of each patient's starting consensus viral sequence, a published activity using this data from the book Microbes Count!, and additional materials prepared by
Scripting argumentative knowledge construction in computer-supported learning environments
Argumentative knowledge construction in computer-supported collaborative learning
environments is often weak. This experimental study analyzes two collaboration scripts, which should facilitate argumentative knowledge construction. One script aims to support the construction of argumentation sequences and the other script aims to support the argument construction. These scripts should facilitate the argumentative knowledge construction on both the micro- and macrostructure of argumentation durin
