Engaging Students in Active Learning Worshop 6
How do we engage students in active learning? In this session, the
teachers examine the elements of authentic instruction and cooperative learning to identify ways of engaging students in social studies content. They review the importance of questioning in relation to higher-order thinking and explore classroom strategies to stimulate
thinking and bring social studies concepts to life for their students.
Feelings Count: Emotions and Learning-Session 5
This program introduces ways to create an emotionally safe classroom to foster learning and to deal effectively with emotions and conflicts that can be obstacles. Featured are a fifth-grade teacher and an eighth-grade band teacher, with expert commentary from Daniel B. Goleman, author of the book Emotional Intelligence, and Yale University Professor James P. Comer.
Introducing Our Literary Community Workshop 1

classes into engaged literary communities. Dr. Langer weaves the
framework, talking about the ways effective readers interact with text
and the ways teachers can foster this kind of learner.
Going Further in Discussion Workshop 3
Since discussion is so central to the growth and development of a
literary community, this program also concentrates on this activity. The teachers talk about ways to recognize good discussion, adding personal anecdotes about ways in which they participate in or step out at various points in the discussion to help students go further in their
understandings of the text. The group also looks at different stimuli
they use to provoke and maintain good discussions in their class
Student Diversity Workshop 5
The varied viewpoints necessary for valuable class discussions are
celebrated in this program. The group talks about the diversity of their students and how their interactions with literature are shaped in part by their life experiences, unique thoughts, and previous reading
experiences. They examine the worth of using the lens of multiple
perspectives to examine a work of literature, and offer suggestions for ways to encourage each student to contribute to the ongoing class
Revising For Clarity Workshop 12
Through a whole class mini-lesson and small group work, Tatiana With and
her fourth-grade class explore the difference between editing and
revising, with a focus on revision. In this lesson, Ms. With uses
IN-Focus technology to model revision of an Indian folk tale.
Reading Across The Curriculum Workshop 13
Gage Reeve’s class is learning new vocabulary in a lesson on global
warming. Students also use an idea tree to record main ideas and
supporting details and write their own questions to be answered after
reading the nonfiction text.
Close Reading For Understanding Workshop 15
