Anatomy of a Tsunami
Tsunami waves can be distinguished from ordinary ocean waves by many factors, including the tremendous amount of energy they carry, the great distance between their wave crests, and their capacity to travel at jetliner speeds across an entire ocean. In this interactive from NOVA Online, explore how the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami -- the deadliest in recorded history -- was triggered, how its waves traveled thousands of kilometers largely unchanged, and what happened once the waves reached coastlin
ICTs and the South African Higher Education Landscape
This report is a mapping exercise, which describes and explores the landscape
of ICTs and higher education in South Africa since 2000. Broadly delineating the terrain, the focus is on teaching and learning within higher education. This study sets out to answer five questions:
1. How are ICTs understood and described by practitioners and researchers?
2. What policies and structures for ICTs exist nationally and institutionally?
3. What does the emerging domain of enquiry look like?
4. How do prac
Supporting Teachers Intervention in Collaborative Knowledge Building
In the context of distributed collaborative learning, the teacher's role is different from traditional teacher-centered environments, they are coordinators/facilitators, guides, and co-learners. They monitor the collaboration activities within a group, detect problems and intervene in the collaboration to give advice and learn alongside students at the same time. We have designed an Assistant to support teachers intervention in collaborative knowledge building. The Assistant monitors the collabo
Training Educators to Design and Develop ODL Materials
Welcome to this facilitator’s guide. It contains exciting materials for conducting a workshop to train educators to develop Open and Distance Learning (ODL) resources. As you navigate through this document you will find materials needed for planning and conducting sessions for training educators in the development of ODL learning resources. These materials have been designed so that they can be used for professional development as well as for personal knowledge.
This facilitator’s guide is
Space coupe to the rescue
For this online activity, students raise and lower their Space Coupe to line it up and destroy virus pods using positive or negative numbers. The challenge is to destroy all eight virus pods within a given time. Negative numbers take the Coupe in a downward direction, sometimes below the waterline, while positive numbers take the Coupe in an upward direction, including out of the water and into the air. The distance the ship needs to travel to destroy each pod is counted using a scale on the lef
Middle School Portal: Math and Science Pathways (MSP2)
This activity asks the student to determine if Florence Griffith-Joyner moved faster than a car traveling 15 miles per hour when she ran 10 meters at a record-breaking 0.91 seconds during the Seoul Olympics. The activity, from the Figure This! collection of 80 math challenges, offers students real world problems related to conversions of units of measure for volume, distance, and temperature. Also included are questions relating to currency exchange and information about world records related to
Middle School Portal: Math and Science Pathways (MSP2)
This activity challenges students to think about angles as geometric shapes and to find the sizes of the angles between their fingers. It is part of the Figure This! collection of 80 online mathematical challenges emphasizing real world uses of mathematics. For this challenge, the students trace a hand stretched to form an L-shape with the thumb and sketches angles of 90 degrees and 45 degrees between the thumb and index finger. They use the sketches to estimate the angles between their other fi
Middle School Portal: Math and Science Pathways (MSP2)
Science identifies speed as a ratio (distance over time). When combined with human innovation, speed can be applied exponentially. Speed is COSI's (Center of Science and Industry) newest traveling exhibit that examines the way in which speed impacts our lives. Speed has become blended and blurred into complex human desires to fall faster, to drop farther, and to climb higher. This website will demonstrate how speed touches our world. Theory and Practice of Online Learning
The second edition features updates on all chapters from the first edition and the addition of 4 new chapters (on Mobile Learning, Social Software, Distance Education Philosophy and Financial Decision Making). Two chapters (Chapter 3 - Value Chain Analysis and Chapter 9 - Copyright Issues)were not updated nor included in the 2nd edition. These two chapters (in addition to all of the origional 1st edition chapters) will continue to made available at this site, however readers are encouraged to ac
Distance Education Clearinghouse
This website is a comprehensive clearinghouse of long-distance education information. Materials on the site are intended to help improve distance- and web-based learning opportunities for both students and educators. The site features a multitude of links to resources for creating or participating in distance education programs and courses. Links are organized into subject areas such as programs and courses, technology, teaching and learning, research, and policies and guidelines. The site also
Write 2 Teach in 3 Days
This is a wiki version of an e-book to be released by the Asian Society for Open and Distance Education. This can be used to develop self-learning materials for use in distance education. Authored by Dr. Sanjaya Mishra of Staff Training and Research Institute of Distance Education, Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi, this open source material is made available through WikiEducator as a professional development resource for promoting quality in distance education.

Lennard-Jones Potential Model
The EJS Lennard-Jones Potential model shows the dynamics of a particle of mass m within this potential. You can drag particle to change its position and you can drag the energy-line to change its total energy.
The Lennard-Jones potential function is a reasonably accurate model of interactions between noble gas atoms. The binding energy epsilon is the depth of the potential well and minimum molecular separation are set equal to unity. This simulation uses uses a natural system of units the m
Molecular Dynamics Demonstration Model
The EJS Molecular Dynamics Demonstration model is constructed using the Lennard-Jones potential truncated at a distance of 3 molecular diameters. The motion of the molecules is governed by Newton's laws, approximated using the Verlet algorithm with the indicated Time step. For sufficiently small time steps dt, the system's total energy should be approximately conserved. Users can select various initial configurations using the drop down menu.
Body With Thruster Model
The Body with Thruster Model shows the motion of a disk with an attached rocket engine. You can drag the engine to change its distance from the center of the disk and you can adjust the thrust of the rocket engine using sliders. The mass of the rocket and its connecting rod are assumed to be negligible. The trajectory of this single-body model is intuitively challenging and difficult to visualize.
Helmholtz Coils
The EJS Helmholtz Coils Model shows a the magnetic field between two circular coils of wire. The default configuration, known as a Helmholtz coil, sets the separation distance D equal to the coil radius R. These values produce a nearly uniform magnetic field B between the coils.
Field day at Pomona College
Three students jump hurdles on a track in front of the old Pomona College gymnasium. A crowd watches from a small hill near the finish line.
Entrepreneurship and Digital Commerce
We are in the midst of a revolution in technology that is transforming significant segments of our economy and our society. The Internet, the World Wide Web, fiber optics, Internet telephony, MP3 compression, digital interactive television, wireless communications, streaming media and a host of other digital technologies are creating many opportunities to establish viable, sustainable new ventures. But as the rise and fall of the dot.com phenomenon has demonstrated there are some huge potholes i
Modeling Architectural Design Objectives in Physically Based Space Planning
Physically based space planning is a means for automating the conceptual design process by applying the physics of motion to space plan elements. This methodology provides for a responsive design process, which allows a designer to easily make decisions whose consequences immediately propagate throughout the design. It combines the speed of automated design methods with the flexibility of manual design methods, while adding a highly interactive quality and a sense of collaboration with the desig
AlgTop20: The geometry of surfaces
This lecture relates the two dimensional surfaces we have just classified with the three classical geometries- Euclidean, spherical and hyperbolic. Our approach to these geometries is non-standard (the usual formulations are in fact deeply flawed) and we concentrate on isometries, avoiding distance and angle formulations. In particular we introduce hyperbolic geometry via inversions in circles---the Beltrami Poincare disk model.
This is the 20th lecture in this beginner's course on Algebraic To
