From the Digital Learning Center for Microbial Ecology, this web site features "Dirtland", an interactive microbe zoo. The site explores the endless varieties of microorganisms and the environments they inhabit. Captured Wisdom on Adult Literacy
This is a series of stories about adult literacy teaching success. In one story, adults learning English use the Internet to find pictures and information about their home country for written and oral reports. In another, adult students act as consultants hired to save a failing restaurant and use technology to deal with irate customers, schedule work hours, and design new menus.
Students will research a social issue and, after learning about the issue, will find out what other students at their school know about it. They will develop a method of gathering and analyzing the data. Various methods of increasing awareness of the issue will be developed and implemented. To measure the success of their efforts, they will give the survey again. A comparison of the two surveys will determine hown effective their efforts have been. Example: Saving gorillas from extinction.
