Reusing IMS-LD Formalized Best Practices in Collaborative Learning Structuring
Designs of CSCL (Computer Supported Collaborative Learning) activities should be flexible, effective and customizable to particular learning situations. On the other hand, structured designs aim to create favourable conditions for learning. Thus, this paper proposes the collection of representative and broadly accepted (best practices) structuring techniques in collaborative learning. The paper also proposes the formulation of these techniques as patterns: the so- called CLFPs (Collaborative Le

Context of this research project.
The empirical studies that were carried out for this thesis were performed in the context of the project 'Inductive Learning’,which was funded by the Dutch Organization for Scientific Research
(NWO). The inductive learning project aimed at ‘clarifying the major constraints of inductive knowledge development’ (as stated in the research proposal). The constraints of inductive knowledge that were specifically studied in the project were prior knowledge, disc
Hiding and showing construction elements in a dynamic geometry software: a focusing process
This paper draws on a study investigating the use dynamic geometry software in the context of open geometry problems requiring conjecturing and proving at secondary school level. After setting the context and main result of the study, the paper will focus in particular on the analysis of the hide/show tool available in Cabri. The way students exploit the possibility of hiding and showing the construction elements of a configuration at stake was revealed to play a fundamental role in the developm

A Model for Interoperability in Computer Supported Collaborative Learning
Computer Supported Collaborative Learning
activities involve combination of complex software
tools that often need to interoperate in a wider context
of learning. This paper proposes a data model that
accommodates requirements of typical collaborative
learning situations and facilitates interoperability of
tools and interchange of products of collaboration and
evaluation data. The model has been tested against
various typical tools used for both synchronous and
asynchronous collaboration of grou
Interactive education: teaching and learning in the information age
This is a guest editorial to a special section of this journal which derives from the work of one of the ESRC Teaching and Learning Programme projects, InterActive Education: Teaching and Learning in the Information Age (http://www.interactiveeducation.
ac.uk), whose overall aim is to investigate the ways in which new technologies can be used in educational settings to enhance learning. The project was predicated on two assumptions: first that teachers are central to learning in schools and that
Cognitive factors related to user involvement with computers and their effects upon learning from an
Cognitive theories proposed to explain the high motivation to use, and deep involvement with computers, often found in schoolchildren suggest three main factors. They are: desire in the user to control the computer; the user responds to a perceived challenge from the computer; and the user wishes to explore the complexity of the computer software. The paper describes an experiment using a specifically developed piece of software to investigate these factors and to assess their effects on involve
Using online role play to teach internet safety awareness
This paper reports on an evaluation of Net-Detectives, a creative online role play activity aimed at 9–12 year olds. Net-Detectives forms part of Kidsmart, an Internet awareness programme aimed at school children. It was evaluated through a multiple method data collection using questionnaire surveys, follow up telephone interviews with teachers and observation in use in three UK schools during the summer term of 2003.
All sources of data collected agreed that a number of benefits arise from p
Reuse of Digital Learning Resources in Collaborative Learning Environments
With background in the proliferation of Information- and Communication Technologies
(ICTs) in educational institutions, there is a growing interest in deploying ICT that complies
with specifications and standards for learning technologies in these institutions. A key
to obtaining the benefits of cost-efficiency and quality that motivate this interest is reuse of
digital learning resources. Despite the significant efforts being made in design and deployment
of learning technology standards facili
The times they are a-changing: the subculture
of music and ICT in the classroom
This paper reports findings from the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) funded research project InterActive Education, which focused on the ways in which new technologies can improve teaching and learning in educational settings. We draw upon data which emanates from the work of seven music teachers working in English primary and secondary schools, who collaborated with university researchers to research their classrooms. Through our analyses of video data, teacher interviews and teach
Representing Domain Knowledge by Concept Maps: How to Validate Them?
For one and the same domain several alternative concept maps may exist, originating from
different world views or purposes. Some of these concept maps may be valid, however not all of them. Thus,
strategies for empirically and objectively validating concept maps in the respective context are necessary. We
outline two methodological approaches for empirically validating concept maps, one for giving evidence of
content validity and one for application validity. One procedure is to validate a given
Semantic annotation for the teacher: models for a computerized memory tool
This article aims to propose a model of semantic annotation dedicated to the teacher. This model must adapt to the teacher’s activity specificity, who needs to master both a pedagogical and domain expertise. In this paper, we analyze the particularity of the teacher’s annotation language that enables the teacher to express his own expertise. First, we identify the concepts of this annotation language used by the community of teachers. Then we propose a conceptual model of this language base
Semantic Annotation Tools for Learning Material
This paper aims at providing the specification for semantic annotation tools for e-learning. From the specific requirements of annotating learning material, we categorize and evaluate the existing annotation tools, mainly general purpose ones. We illustrate two research prototypes of annotation tools we developed, and evaluate to what extend the specific requirements of annotating learning material are reached by these research prototypes
MemoNote, an annotation-based personal knowledge management tool for teachers
This article aims to propose a personal knowledge management tool based on annotation, MemoNote, dedicated to teacher. The teacher is considered as a knowledge worker. MemoNote makes use of the teacher's annotation activity to memorize his/her personal conception about the document content, (in particular the domain and the pedagogy knowledge). This paper identifies three general requirements for the annotation object in such a tool to enable the teacher to manage his/her document-related person
