Then the hammer flies from his hand and he makes four attempts to pick it up by bending down and leaning to reach for it. He gives up and returns to the rover to get the tongs to pick up the hammer successfully.

Purification of Maltose-Binding Protein from E. coli Periplasm
By correlating the protein concentration of various fractions from E. coli with the appearance of samples on a gel, this exercise introduces beginning students to the quantitative "bookkeeping" involved in protein purification.
