Xerte
Xerte is an xml editor and run time engine that makes it easy to create and deploy interactive learning objects that are highly accessible and SCORM compliant. Xerte helps you focus on interactive design by providing tools that are fit for purpose and easy to use. Users of Xerte will be familiar with Flash and will benefit from some experience in ActionScript or JavaScript.
The physiology of the kidneys
Aimed at pre-registration Nursing students studying human biology, this learning object introduces the physiology of the kidney, examining the processes by which the kidneys filter blood, control body pH and eliminate the waste products of metabolism from the body.
The inflammatory response
This learning object describes the inflammatory response - a series of local cellular and vascular responses which are triggered when the body is injured or invaded by micro-organisms or antigen.

Mrs. Matthews Penicillin and Bacteria Necklaces
Mrs. Matthews class has been learning about unicellular organisms - including bacteria. Last week the students made bacteria beads out of play-doh during their centers. They also made a penicillin bead to "kill off" the bacteria. After allowing time for the play-doh to dry, the students then put all of their beads onto a necklace as they studied four famous scientists in the world of microbes (Fleming, Pasteur, Lister, and Salk).  Today they learned that Alexander Fleming discovered

Ontology Development at the Conceptual Level for Theory-Aware ITS Authoring Systems
This paper presents ontology engineering at the conceptual level, based on case analysis where an author (a human or software agent), assisted by an ITS authoring system, needs to select an instructional strategy (method) in order to develop a learning scenario or environment. A detailed description of the development process at the conceptual level is provided, followed by the presentation of its results. Outstanding issues raised therein will be shared for further reflection.
Case Studies in Science Education: Terez—Grade 4
Terez, a fourth-grade teacher, is developing an assessment strategy that is more student centered.,Terez is a teacher who is interested in using portfolios in her classroom. Different techniques are shown and discussed. Students are seen discussing and studying a few topics in Earth science, such as rocks and minerals, and weather and sky.
An artistic view of outer space
This is an art lesson easily integrated by art specialists or classroom teachers into any thematic unit that involves space, the solar system, or science fiction and is adaptable for students in grades 2 through 6. It incorporates the use of art materials such as oil pastels and compasses and the design concepts of shape and balance in a composition as well as providing the students with a fun and creative way to explore areas of geometry and science. This lesson is especially useful for classro

The Diver Project: Interactive Digital Video Repurposing
The digital interactive video exploration and reflection (Diver) system lets users create virtual pathways through existing video content using a virtual camera and an annotation window for commentary. Users can post their Dives to the WebDiver server system to generate active collaboration, further repurposing, and discussion. Although our current work focuses on video records in learning research and educational practices, Diver can aid collaborative analysis of a broad array of visual data re
Toward a Learning Technologies Knowledge Network
The National Science Foundation-funded Center for Innovative Learning Technologies (CILT) is designed to be a national resource for stimulating research and development of technology- enabled solutions to critical problems in K-14 science, math, engineering and technology learning. The Center, launched at the end $1997, is organized around four themes identg5ed as areas where research is likely to result in major gains in teaching and learning, and sponsors research across disciplines and instit
Using the WWW to Build Learning Communities in K-12 Settings - Part II: The Next Generation of Web S
In Part II, we will lay out a plan for an educational Web server that goes beyond what is currently available, providing a truly vital and useful resource for classroom learning. Finally, we will describe current plans for the CoVis Geosciences Web Server, an educational Web resource designed according to the plans outlined in this article.,web document
Semiotic mediation for algebra teaching and learning.
In the theoretical framework of Vygotskij's Theory this report discusses the mediating function of particular tools available in a microworld. Following the analysis carried out by one of the authors, in the case of Cabri a new microworld has been set up and a teaching experiment carried out. Some results are reported and the theoretical notion of semiotic mediation discussed.
