Laurie Fladd was excited to find out she could have a heart valve replacement without having open heart surgery. She became the first patient at MUSC and in South Carolina to have the Melody transcatheter valve procedure. Dr. Phil Saul and Dr. Rani Bandisode explain how it works.
Mrs. Henrietta Lacks' Legacy: Impact on Recent Research
Her name was Henrietta Lacks, but scientists know her as HeLa. She was a poor Southern tobacco farmer who worked the same land as her slave ancestors, yet her cells -- taken without her knowledge -- became one of the most important tools in medicine.
In this eight-minute video, Hayley Warren, a sophomore at The Field School in Washington, D.C., presents a paper she wrote detailing the impact of HeLa cells on recent medical research.
