A House Divided: Clara's 'Rebel' Dress
Johns Hopkins University alumnus Edward Papenfuse, the Maryland State Archivist, tells the story of a 4-year-old girl who was stopped in the streets of Baltimore by Federal troops during the Civil War for wearing a dress that evoked Confederate sympathies. The young girl, Clara, kept the dress for the rest of her life and it now is part of the collection at the Maryland Historical Society.
