What's in a title: Understanding meanings in community care
What do we mean by ‘community’, ‘care’ and ‘welfare’? In this unit you will explore the meanings of these words in their historical and cultural settings. The unit does not discuss these terms exclusively in terms of social work practice so service users, carers or anyone interested in community care and the ways in which welfare services are provided would find this unit useful.Author(s):
Learning outcomes After studying this unit you should be able to: demonstrate your understanding of the importance of negotiating the meaning of care relationships; identify ways in which people play the roles of ‘carer’ and ‘receiver of care’.

2 Pressure for change Bedford Mencap was founded in 1955, as a branch of the National Association for Parents of Backward Children. It provides services for its members, such as the Welfare Visitors Scheme, and also campaigns for change at national and local levels. When the branch was founded there was no provision for families other than the advice to put their child into a mental handicap hospital. Now, partly due to the efforts of Mencap, there is far more on offer. However, you'll shortly be hearing that whil
6.2 Communicating need Daisy could tell the difference between Mia's cries quite soon after birth. Some babies may not communicate their various needs quite so clearly as Mia, and carers have to work hard to interpret them. Carers who can make time to watch, listen and ‘be there’ for the baby can try different things, asking others if they are not sure. Most babies will tell you if their needs are not being met – by the way they know best: crying! Below are extracts from accounts of two babies, observed

The Earth spins at night
22 days of data from the Suomi NPP satellite went into making this beautiful and eerie view of the Earth at night, spinning in a black sky. The satellite can see in the visible and near-infrared at high sensitivity, able to map city lights, fires, and even moonlit weather. This animation is made from real images, mapped onto the previously existing Blue Marble images to make the view more realistic.

7.3 The central engine An object that fluctuates in brightness on a timescale Δt can have a radius no greater than R ∼ cΔt. The point-like nature of AGNs and their rapid variability imply that the emitting region is smaller than the size of the Solar System. The central engine of a typical AGN is believed to contain a supermassive black hole of mass ∼108M ⊙ and Schwarzschild radius

1.4 Specialised intermediate filaments Compared with other cytoskeletal elements, intermediate filaments are more like a fixed scaffolding for the cell. They have a higher tensile strength than microtubules and microfilaments. Consequently they contribute greatly to the overall integrity of the cell and preservation of its shape. Not all eukaryotic cells have cytoskeletal intermediate filaments, and of those that do, each cell type has its own distinct set of intermediate filaments. The intermediate filaments, being cell-type spec
Introduction Even the simplest organisms can detect and respond to events in their ever-changing environment. Similarly, within a multicellular organism, cells are surrounded by an extracellular environment from which signals are received and responded to. Extracellular events are decoded and transmitted to relevant parts of individual cells by way of a series of activation/deactivation steps involving many intracellular molecules. This relay of information along molecular pathways is called signal tra
Introduction This unit provides access to the iSpot website, where you can share your observations of wildlife, whether these are descriptions or photographs. iSpot is a social networking site that was created to encourage people to engage with nature.
