But with great power comes great responsibility. Come learn the tricks to keeping your XAML-based Windows Store apps smooth and responsive, and find out about tools to light your way if you should find yourself in the dark! In this first activity, I want you to make a short recording of your voice. Note: This optional activity requires the use of a 1.4 Analysis Data analysis begins with the statement of data requirements and then produces a conceptual data model. The aim of analysis is to obtain a detailed description of the data that will suit user requirements so that both high and low level properties of data and their use are dealt with. These include properties such as the possible range of values that can be permitted for attributes such as, in the Open University example for instance, the course code, course title and credit points. 1.1.1 Desirable properties of a database As you will see, there are many possible choices that can be made during the design and many rules to guide this work. When trying to decide if some choices are better than others, you need to consider the key desirable properties of a database. The table here outlines some of them: Learning outcomes Having completed your study of this unit you will: be able to describe the key points of the waterfall model applied to database development; appreciate the roles of various development artefacts, such as the data requirements document, conceptual data model and such like used to communicate between activities in the database development life cycle; be able to communicate effectively about aspects of the development of databases. Speaker(s): Maurice Fraser, Polly Toynbee | ‘Progressive’ is a slippery term. Right (i.e. Left) - thinking people use it with casual abandon, to confer moral approval on a set of values which they regard as uncontroversial. But on close examination the meaning of the term appears contingent, historically-specific and eminently contestable. Who is to say what is ‘progressive’? Is it time to rescue it from political correctness? And can the Right lay at least as compelling a claim to it as
Nov. 21 - In the western world, thousands of gallons of water are flushed down the toilet every year - valuable water that could otherwise be used for drinking or growing food. But a Canadian company is trying to minimize that waste by producing waterless, composting lavatories that not only save water, but also producer fertilizer for the garden. Tara Cleary reports.

In this paper, two problems concerning truthfulness of computer-generated visualization are considered. The first one concerns relationships between reality and its representation by computer renderings. The second problem concerns the kind of representations people need. These problems are analyzed for static perception of architectural forms based on computer visualization, and for dynamic walk-through perception of urban space. The thesis of the paper is that many photorealistic renderings ar

Scenario-based language e-learning (SBeL) is focused on contextual learning, since it uses authentic activities that can improve communication skills. This paper reports a case-study that proposes the use of animated pedagogical agents (APAs) in a Brazilian Portuguese web-based course built under a mix of task- and scenario-based approaches. Its main purpose is to discuss how APAs can be used to improve students communicative skills, cultural awareness and level of interaction with courses c

This one discusses some work on student and staff perceptions of assesment and grading. we used a 'talk-aloud' technique to get students and colleagues talking as they worked through writing and grading (respectively) assignments of various kinds. There are six short extracts from the recordings. Voices have been distorted to preserve anonymity. As you might expect, students and staff have quite different perceptions of what is required!
