The effect of collaborative knowledge modeling at a distance on performance and on learning
This study examines the effect of co-elaborating a knowledge model in dyads at a distance on performance and on learning. Forty-eight adults participated in the study. Participants were trained to re-represent knowledge taken from a text, using an object-typed knowledge modeling editor software tool. Knowledge modeling is similar to concept mapping, except that the former is based on a typology of knowledge objects and a typology of links, and that the structure of the knowledge representation i

Introduction to Political Philosophy
This course is intended as an introduction to political philosophy as seen through an examination of some of the major texts and thinkers of the Western political tradition. Three broad themes that are central to understanding political life are focused upon: the polis experience (Plato, Aristotle), the sovereign state (Machiavelli, Hobbes), constitutional government (Locke), and democracy (Rousseau, Tocqueville). The way in which different political philosophies have given expression to various

Smart Architecture: Integration of Digital and Building Technologies
Recent developments in digital technologies and smart materials have created new opportunities and are suggesting significant changes in the way we design and build architecture. Traditionally, however, there has always been a gap between the new technologies and their applications into other areas. Even though, most technological innovations hold the promise to transform the building industry and the architecture within, and although, there have been some limited attempts in this area recently;

Dual-phase steel water quenched from 775°C
Same steel when quenched from 775°C. Carbides cannot be seen anymore. The microstructure is essentially martensite and ferrite. Some retained austenite can be seen as white small particles which are brighter than the background ferrite. Retained austenite measured using XRD was 3%. The step-etching technique has resulted in straw-coloured martensite, white austenite and the off-white ferrite at the background.

The micrograph shows the three distinct phases of γ' present in polycrystalline superalloys. These are primary, secondary and tertiary γ', defined by their sizes (primary 0.5-1μm), (secondary 30-200nm), (tertiary 1-25nm) and their locations within the microstructure. Primary γ' segregates on the grain boundaries whereas the other forms are more uniformly distributed throughout the matrix. A grain boundary is clearly visible running from top right to bottom left. This document addresses two questions: What are the ultimate means of design support we can offer to the architect, and how can we devise them? We are not the first ones to address these questions, neither the first ones to point our finger in the direction of Decision Support Systems for such purposes. Nevertheless, we may be among those scholars that understanding 'Decision Support" in terms of "Learning Support", are willing to explore the implications that such an understanding assumes for t
