Detecting Genetically Modified Food by PCR
Genetic engineering is responsible for the so-called "second green revolution."  Genes that encode herbicide resistance, insect resistance, drought tolerance, frost tolerance, and other traits have been added to many plants of commercial importance. In 2003, 167 million acres of farmland worldwide were planted in genetically modified (GM) crops equal to one fourth of total land under cultivation.  The most widely planted GM crops are soybeans, corn, cotton, canola, and papaya. Two important tr

Plant Structure
The plant stem is  above ground and supports the plant leaves. The stem is made of the protective dermal tissue, the ground tissue and the bundled  tissue. Plants have one primary root and secondary root branches that contain thousands of root hairs and this is explained in this three minute video. A word wall and/or handout would be most helpful in watching this video because the graphics are poor.

Speaking Innovation to Power: The Uses and Abuses of Power in Social Innovation
Speaking innovation to power is a key element of successful, system changing, social innovations. This session will ground the dynamics of challenging and channeling existing power resources to support real change in cases as diverse as helping displaced persons camps in Eritrea, facilitating multistakeholder collaborations in British Columbia and changing the power dynamics of environmental organizations through the use of global search engines.

Corporate leadership for change
Fascination with leadership is growing daily, fuelled by global complexity, free-falling capital markets, conflict and growing environmental and social deterioration. Key business leaders will discuss the kind of leadership required in the face of accentuated resource scarcity, more pervasive need and highly uncertain prospects. They will explore the excitement and challenges of operating through networked approaches that eschew traditional “command and control” models for a more “viral mo

Plan is Dead: to BIM or not to BIM, that is the question
Drawing, modeling and the explicit abstraction embedded in the traditions and conventions of visual communication through composition and representation are fundamental to the how, why and what of architectural design. BIM presents simulation as an antiabstract means of visual communication that seeks to displace the discreet representation of plan, section and elevation with the intelligent object model. If plan is dead, the implication is that the value of abstraction is dead or dying as well.

1.725J Chemicals in the Environment: Fate and Transport (MIT)
This core class in the Environmental M.Eng. program is for all students interested in the behavior of chemicals in the environment. The emphasis is on man-made chemicals; their movement through water, air, and soil; and their eventual fate. Physical transport, as well as chemical and biological sources and sinks, are discussed. Linkages to health effects, sources and control, and policy aspects are discussed and debated.

6 Conclusion
The extreme challenges of life in the polar regions require the animals who make their habitat there to make many adaptations. This unit explores the polar climate and how animals like reindeer, polar bears, penguins, sea life and even humans manage to survive there. It looks at the adaptations to physiological proceses, the environmental effects on diet, activity and fecundity, and contrasts the strategies of aquatic and land-based animals in surviving in this extreme habitat. This unit builds
