This video (running time 4:40) explains how to make a scaled bar graph by skip counting. Beginning by defining the word scaled as "using a shrinking machine," it explains the purpose of drawing things to scale. Data is given in table format, showing why a scaled bar graph is needed (the numbers are too big to count by ones). On January 26, 1788, Captain Arthur Phillip guides a fleet of 11 British ships carrying convicts to the colony of New South Wales, effectively founding Australia. After overcoming a period of hardship, the fledgling colony began to celebrate the anniversary of this date with great fanfare. (1:00)
