The Montiers of Philadelphia
December 30, 2009 - Spring 2011: The earliest surviving portraits of an African American couple, Hiram and Elizabeth Brown Montier, provide a first-person perspective on their lives in nineteenth-century Philadelphia. On public view for the first time while on long-term loan to the Museum, the portraits invite special consideration as documents of marriage and family life within the city’s free African American community.
Football Coach Loses 300 Pounds After Weight Loss Surgery
Hemingway football coach Clay Owens weighed 660 pounds and was told by his doctors that he needed to lose weight or he would die. His insurance would not cover the surgery, so the community rallied together and raised $40,000 for him to have gastric bypass at the Medical University of South Carolina.
