Ira Spanierman discusses Cincinnati-born artist Edward Henry Potthast (1857-1927) who moved to New York in the 1890s. The Shade, ca. 1920, is one of his most famous paintings by Potthast that depicts beachgoers enjoying themselves in the sun. Potthast was famous for his paintings of leisurely scenes at the beach, which he painted almost exclusively. This is a short video, but may have value to understanding the painter and how some of them favor one subject area or location.
