3.1 Introduction
Legacy fundraising, big-gift seeking are all part of the professional fundraiser's role. This unit will help you to gain the skills necessary to persuade individuals to become donors. How do you change people's ideas about methods of giving, moving them from casual street donations to regular direct debit giving?

1.3 Attending to sounds From the earlier sections, you will appreciate that the auditory system is able to separate different, superimposed sounds on the basis of their different source directions. This makes it possible to attend to any one sound without confusion, and we have the sensation of moving our ‘listening attention’ to focus on the desired sound. For example, as I write this I can listen to the quiet hum of the computer in front of me, or swing my attention to the bird song outside the window to
Do You Have the Strength?
In this activity, students squeeze a tennis ball to demonstrate the strength of the human heart. Working in teams, they think of ways to keep the heart beating if the natural mechanism were to fail. The goal of this activity is to get students to understand the strength and resilience of the heart.
Magnetic Attraction
Students complete a series of six short investigations involving magnets to learn more about their properties. Students also discuss engineering uses for magnets and brainstorm examples of magnets in use in their everyday lives.
Speed Reading
This two minute video explains some of the methods for improving reading speed include increasing the range of the
block of words that are read at the same time, as well as avoiding the urge to go back and reread a sentence. Improve focus and reduce the length of time required to understand a sentence. It also explains why speed reading is important.
Portable Sundial
Students investigate the accuracy of sundials and the discrepancy that lies between "real time" and "clock time." They track the position of the sun during the course of a relatively short period of time as they make a shadow plot, a horizontal sundial, and a diptych sundial. (The activity may be abridged to include only one or two of the different sundials, instead of all three.)
Brain Gym in First Grade Classroom
This short video shows a first grade classroom counting by 2's by raising each leg and touching them until they get to 30. The teacher then asks the students to hook up their feet, arm, and tongue. She introduces subtraction to the class and encourages and praises students. (1:20)
