Law, Disorder, and Philadelphia's Police Advisory Board
Dr. Nicole Maurantonio's talk explores the ways in which news discourse surrounding the 1964 riots in Philadelphia ultimately led to the undermining of the city's precedent-setting Police Advisory Board. She argues that the unintentional effect of local print coverage of the riots was to provide a language of police paralysis that provided fodder for law and order advocates throughout the city.

This course is an introduction to the cross-cultural study of ethnic and national identity. We examine the concept of social identity, consider how gender, religious and racial identity components interact with ethnic and national ones. We explore the history of nationalism, including the emergence of the idea of the nation-state, and discuss the effects of globalization, migration, and transnational institutions. We also look at identity politics and ethnic conflict.

I will clap my hands,
bundle my fingers into fists,
lift them and shake them
and laugh, this belly laugh
of pure simple joy
for the precious feet
that have come through
the stone and dust
to my shelter to find me
to echo my prayers,
to rest a warm hand
on my fevered head
and shower me
with the falling leaves
of the scriptures,
to embrace me
to embrace this broken body
to embrace this flesh
to whisper

Through the Luce/SFS Program on Religion and International Affairs, Georgetown's Berkley Center for Religion, Peace, and World Affairs held a symposium on October 28, 2010 on religious freedom and US national security policy. Questions addressed include: Why should national security specialists be concerned about religious freedom? Under what conditions might greater US support for religious liberty abroad help to reduce political instability, religious radicalism and terrorist violence?
In this video Kermit tries to demonstrate the difference between light and dark using a lamp. Grover comes in and lets the sun light in the darkened room. Kermit explains that the sun is another source of light. In true Grover style, he causes chaos in the dark. This is a good teaching resource for an introductory lesson on opposites. Students will enjoy watching this (2:31).

Hailed as 'the new Nostradamus', Bruce Bueno de Mesquita has been shaking the world of political science to its foundations with his predictions of world events. His systems based on game theory have an astonishing 90%+ ratio of accuracy and are frequently used to shape US foreign-policy decisions on issues such as the terrorist threat to America to the peace process in Northern Ireland. Considered by many to be the most important foreign-policy analyst there is, it is no surprise that he is reg
