Numerical simulation of chlorine disinfection processes in non-ideal reactors
The efficacy of disinfection processes in water purification systems is governed by several key factors including reactor hydraulics, disinfectant chemistry and microbial inactivation kinetics. The objective of this work was to develop a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model to predict flow structure, mass transport, chlorine decay and microbial inactivation in a continuous flow reactor. The significance of this dissertation is that comprehensive 3D numerical model was developed to address al
Improved Critical Thinking Skills as a Result of Direct Instruction and Their Relationship to Academ
This experimental study examined the effect of direct instruction in critical thinking on the critical thinking ability and academic achievement of Freshman students being tutored in repeat courses at a rural southeastern Pennsylvania university. This study used the Thinker's Guides, based on Richard Paul's model of critical thinking, and the Rationale Argument Mapping Program, based on the research of Tim van Gelder. Subjects' abstract reasoning and problem solving skills were measured by the C
Parenting Education for Low-Income Parents of Preschoolers: What is the Most Effective Approach?
Parent education programs have been found to be effective interventions for lower-socioeconomic families. (Baydar, Reid, & Webster-Stratton, 2002). Although research has reliably reported that any parent training is better than no parent training (Helm & Kozloff, 1986), the effectiveness of group parent education programs which emphasize relational improvement is largely unknown. The present study attempted to address this question by comparing archival data collected between the years 1999 and
Prostate Cancer Screening Decision Making Under Controversy: Implications for Health Promotion Pract
Prostate cancer is a major health problem for U.S. men and is characterized by paradoxes and controversies. Despite the wide availability of the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) test, prostate cancer screening remains a controversial practice mainly because the direct impact of screening on mortality is not yet proven. As the relative value of screening, early detection, and treatment strategies continue to be debated, glaring racial-ethnic disparities persist with African American men experienci
The Role of Community Advisory Boards: Involving Communities in the Informed Consent Process
Ethical research involving human subjects mandates that individual informed consent be obtained from research participants or from surrogates when participants are not able to consent for themselves. The existing requirements for informed consent assume that all study participants have personal autonomy; fully comprehend the purpose, risks, and benefits of the research; and volunteer for projects that disclose all relevant information. Yet contemporary examples of lapses in the individual informe
Health inequalities and the welfare state: perspectives from social epidemiology
It might be assumed that welfare states that have done so much to reduce inequality of opportunity have also reduced inequality of health outcomes. While great advances have been seen in reducing the rates of many diseases in welfare states, disparities in health have not been eliminated. Is it the case that lowering risks overall will leave disparities that cannot be remediated, and that such efforts are at the point of diminishing returns? The evidence suggests that this is not true. Instead t

About the MISTI Program
The MIT International Science and Technology Initiatives—better known as MISTI—connects MIT students and faculty with research and innovation around the world. MIT's primary international program, MISTI is a pioneer in applied international studies—a distinctively MIT concept. Working closely with a network of premier corporations, universities and research institutes, MISTI matches hundreds of MIT students annually with all-expenses-paid internships and research abroad.
4 Other influences on evolution
In this unit, we describe the theory of evolution by natural selection as proposed by Charles Darwin in his book, first published in 1859, On The Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection, or The Preservation of Favoured Races in the Struggle for Life. We will look at natural selection as Darwin did, taking inheritance for granted, but ignoring the mechanisms underlying it.
Cardiology Examination - Carotid Pulse
Examine the carotid pulse.
1. Observe for carotid pulsations.
2. Place your fingers behind the patient's neck and compress the carotid artery on one side with your thumb at or below the level of the cricoid cartilage. Press firmly but not to the point of
discomfort. Avoid compressing both sides at the same time. This could cut off the blood supply to the brain and cause syncope. Avoid compressing
the carotid sinus higher up in the neck. This could lead to bradycardia and depressed bloo
Cardiology Examination - Auscultation for bruits
If the patient is middle-aged or elderly, you should auscultate for bruits. A bruit is often, but not always, a sign of arterial narrowing and risk of a stroke.
- Place the bell of the stethoscope over each carotid artery in turn. You
may use the diaphragm if the patient's neck is highly contoured.
- Ask the patient to stop breathing for a moment.
- Listen for a blowing or rushing sound-a bruit. Do not be confused by heart sounds or murmurs transmitted from the chest.
The OTTER Sami tent OER
This is a reproduction of the Second Life Sami tent and is for free distribution within Second Life as a repurposable OER. It is available in two clearly identified forms: 1. As a single SL artefact, where all discrete items have been linked together to make a whole. 2. As a number of discrete SL artefacts. In addition, this OER includes two SL training guides: one for students and one for tutors. Users are encouraged to first read the 'Handout for the Sami tent OER' .
Learning with the Web 2.0: The Encyclopedia of Life
In the 1990s, the World Wide Web has revolutionized the way in which knowledge seekers satisfy their thirst for knowledge. During the recent years, a technological and social paradigm shift called Web 2.0 attracted a lot of attention in the Internet community and is considered a major evolution of the web. New online applications make it easier for individuals to learn, using the vast information provided by the Internet and the collective intelligence of its users. The Encyclopedia of Life, a g
Training strategies and knowledge acquisition: Using the same reflective tools for different purpose
The Emma educational system embodies a Knowledge Based System (KBS) that models a problem-solving method defined at an abstract level. In order to allow different explicit problem-solvings, the KBS is based on a Task-Method modelisation. The objectives of this paper are (1) to explain how we take advantage of the flexibility provided by the modelisation by using analysis-modules that can study what the influence of the student's propositions on the rest of the solving is; (2) to highlight that e
