This class presents microeconomic theory and applications of consumer and producer behavior and welfare analysis at an intermediate level. In addition to standard competitive models, we study deviations due to externalities, asymmetric information, and imperfect rationality. We apply this material to policy debates including minimum wage regulations, food stamp provision, trade protection, educational credentials, health insurance markets, and Internet shopping.

Venus transits the sun.
On June 5 2012, the Solar Dynamics Observatory collected images of the rarest predictable solar event--the transit of Venus across the face of the sun. This event lasted approximately 6 hours and happens in pairs eight years apart, which are separated from each other by 105 or 121 years. Alfred University's "Memories of Alfred" - Fraternities and Sororities
Fraternities and sororities is a chapter from a film entitled "Memories of Alfred," which is a compilation of 16mm and 35mm amateur movies taken from the early 1930s through the late 1950s by cinematographers, W. Varick Nevins III '32 and Huber S. Watson '41. They have provided us with a comprehensive and enduring record of student life in Alfred during a very special time.

PHRGE presents the Honorable Albie Sachs
In February 2010, the Program on Human Right and the Global Economy welcomed the Honorable Albie Sachs, retired justice of the Constitutional Court of South Africa.
From a young age, Justice Albie Sachs played a prominent part in the struggle for justice in South Africa. As a result, he was detained in solitary confinement, was subjected to sleep deprivation and eventually injured by a car bomb that cost him an arm and the sight in one eye.
