Using online role play to teach internet safety awareness
This paper reports on an evaluation of Net-Detectives, a creative online role play activity aimed at 9–12 year olds. Net-Detectives forms part of Kidsmart, an Internet awareness programme aimed at school children. It was evaluated through a multiple method data collection using questionnaire surveys, follow up telephone interviews with teachers and observation in use in three UK schools during the summer term of 2003.
All sources of data collected agreed that a number of benefits arise from p
Reuse of Digital Learning Resources in Collaborative Learning Environments
With background in the proliferation of Information- and Communication Technologies
(ICTs) in educational institutions, there is a growing interest in deploying ICT that complies
with specifications and standards for learning technologies in these institutions. A key
to obtaining the benefits of cost-efficiency and quality that motivate this interest is reuse of
digital learning resources. Despite the significant efforts being made in design and deployment
of learning technology standards facili
Adaptive and Dynamic Hypertext Tutoring Systems Based on Knowledge Space Theory
Knowledge space theory provides a formal model for representing students' knowledge and describing the structure of a domain of knowledge. A similar formal structure can be used to described the structure of hypertexts. The combination of knowledge space theory and the formal hypertext model leads to a framework for intelligent tutoring systems which provides individualized learning paths to a student. Using powerful procedures from relational database systems and from knowledge space theory, we
Taking teaching context into account for semantic annotation patterns
In this article, starting from MemoNote pattern functionalities enabling teacher to memorize semantic and personal annotations, our objective is to extend them with context-aware capabilities. MemoNote uses annotation patterns to deduce annotation semantics from the form chosen by the teacher. We specify the annotation context, its capture from elements of the teaching situation and we model it with ontologies. Annotation context model is then directly integrated into the previous pattern formal
A computer program for the learning of algebra: description and first experiment
We present APLUSIX, a computer system that helps students to learn algebra, available at http://aplusix.imag.fr. APLUSIX contains an advanced 2D editor of algebraic expressions that allows students to make the calculations (s)he wants, like in a paper-pencil context. The system verifies the student's calculations, by calculating the equivalence between two consecutives expressions, and shows the result to the student. It provides information concerning the progress of the resolution. Furthermore
The roles of models in Artificial Intelligence and Education research: a prospective view
In this paper I speculate on the near future of research in Artificial Intelligence and Education (AIED), on the basis of three uses of models of educational processes: models as scientific tools, models as components of educational artefacts, and models as bases for design of educational artefacts. In terms of the first role, I claim that the recent shift towards studying collaborative learning situations needs to be accompanied by an evolution of the types of theories and models that are used,
A model for negotiation in teaching-learning dialogues
Despite the fact that a number of researchers from a wide variety of theoretical perspectives have claimed that negotiation in dialogue is fundamental in learning, little research has been based on a precise notion of what negotiation is and how it relates to learning. This paper describes a model for negotiation, based on analysis of teacher-student and learner-learner dialogues. After discussion of illustrative examples and review of related research, negotiations are defined in terms of four
An integrated perspective to approach technology in mathematics education
This paper concerns a research work developed in an European project. The aim of this work was to produce a document integrating the different theoretical frameworks employed by the project teams. The theoretical constructs of didactical functionalities, and experimental educational cycle, associated to an ICT tool, allowed us to analyse the roles played by technology in the considered set of theoretical frameworks. With this respect, we present examples concerning the theory of didactic situati
A pedagogical approach to the design of Learning Objects
In this paper we describe an approach to the design of learning objects (LOs) suitable to support learning in complex domains at university level. Our proposal is centred on a costructivist approach where learning is viewed as resulting from personal activity and comparison with the activity of others. Our pedagogical approach to knowledge acquisition and to the use of technological tools is realized by means of didactical units which can be implemented as Learning Objects (LOs) with a variety o
An analysis of the SRL potential of TGS/TES Online Course, a Technology Enhanced Learning Environmen
This report presents an analysis of the potential support to Self-Regulated Learning granted by a CSCL environment developed for carrying out language master courses. The analysis is made by applying a check-list developed within the European project TELEPEERS.,Research Report
The Seven, no eight, nine C's of Mobile Learning
This paper was presented at the Mobile Learning Workshop at the Kaleidoscope Alpine Rendez-Vous 2007. It identifies theories from the fields of cognition and educational psychology that can usefully be employed to explain the interactions between the user and their mobile device in a variety of mlearning contexts. The theoretical approaches that appear to be most relevant to mlearning are those that stem from the constructivist approach to learning, involve learner control and challenge by setti
Selection and use of domain ontologies in Learning Networks for Lifelong Competence Development
A general problem in life-long learning is how to develop flexible and adaptive learning content, and how to choose and deliver the most appropriate learning activities for the learner. In order to solve this problem, we need to have the proper knowledge model, and clear interpretation how to use it. One possible solution is to use IMS Learning Design for modelling the learning process and ontologies for representing the domain knowledge and competencies. In this paper we present one specific ap
Pedagogical text indexation and exploitation for language learning
In this article we present the MIRTO platform -under development at the University Stendhal of Grenoble- and how it addresses common flaws of CALL software. This platform led to another project: the creation of a pedagogically indexed text base. We introduce here the notion of pedagogical indexation, and confront the particular case of pedagogical indexation for language learning with the existing pedagogical
resource description standards, before proposing leads towards the implementation of th
NLP-based scripting for CALL activities
This article focuses on the development of Natural Language Processing (NLP) tools for Computer Assisted Language Learning (CALL). After identifying the inherent limitations of NLP-free tools, we describe the general framework of Mirto, an NLP-based authoring platform under construction in our laboratory, and organized into four distinct layers: functions, scripts, activities and scenarios. Through several examples, we explain how Mirto's architecture allows to implement state-of-the-art NLP fun

Virtual mental space: interacting with the characters of works of literature
We build the software implementation of virtual mental space: its
inhabitants are interacting with the literature characters in natural language.
The players are encouraged to ask questions about intentions and desires,
knowledge and believes, pretending and deceiving of the literature characters.
Works of literature are identified based on the patterns of mental interaction
between the characters. Reasoning about mental states and natural language
processing with the semantic focus are the tech
