Popular WSU Green Bike program expanding
Washington State University's Green Bike program is expanding again, making 85 bikes available for rental at seven locations across the Pullman campus. The bikes from the BIXI company have been very popular with students. On the evening before the first day of classes, the newest students got a chance to participate in their first University tradition — Convocation, the ceremonial welcome into the Penn academic community. Nearly 2,500 freshman and 129 transfer students attended the ceremony, the first time the Class of 2015 marched as a group. Convocation is considered one bookend of their life at Penn. Varma and his team designed a system made up of heating panels to simulate the effects of fire on steel structures. The panels have electrical coils, like giant toaster ovens, and are placed close to the surface of the specimens. Wear a Chimp on Your Wrist
The OLogy activity offers an interesting twist on the study of DNA. Students use colored beads (or gumdrops) to create a bracelet that's based on a section of DNA code. The two strands of the bracelet are then twisted together into a double helix. They can choose to recreate DNA code from a list of favorite plants and animals that includes a monarch butterfly, a chimpanzee, a sunflower, and a brown trout. The activity includes illustrated step-by-step directions.
