"Progeria" derives from Greek for 'prematurely old' because the disease usually appears as wrinkling and aging of the face. Progeria occurs in two forms: Progeria of childhood, described by Jonathan Hutchinson (1886) and Hastings Gilford (1897), diagnosed in the first or second year of life and Progeria adultorum commonly indicated as Werner Syndrome. Show Me the Money
Students learn about the major factors that comprise the design and construction cost of a modern bridge. Before a bridge design is completed, engineers provide overall cost estimates for construction of the bridge. Students learn about the components that go into estimating the total cost, including expenses for site investigation, design, materials, equipment, labor and construction oversight, as well as the trade-off between a design and its cost.
Growing and Graphing
Students visit a 2nd and a 4th grade class to measure the heights of older students using large building blocks as a non-standard unit of measure. Woman's Building History: Betty Gordon (Otis College)
Betty came to the Women's Building in 1976 to pursue her journey as an artist. While earning an MA in Healing Art Making at The Feminist Studio Workshop, Betty developed and implemented a teaching practicum exploring imaginative thinking as a learning space.
Today Betty lives in Seattle with her family and relies on imaginative thinking to understand life as an octogenarian.
