The Exchange: The Art of Politics
At the RNC, Rob Cox talks to Evan Handler, actor and Creative Coalition advocate, about economic arguments for supporting the arts.
5.1 Sudden changes The third category of thermal effects identified in Section 2 are those associated with sudden changes. Here are some technically important examples where things change suddenly at a particular temperature: Pure water boils at 100 °C (at atmospheric pressure).<
3.1 Modelling properties This section provides a model for properties interpreted in terms of the average thermal energy of all the constituent atoms of a material. Since absolute temperature T is a measure of average atomic kinetic energy, we shall expect to be looking at properties that change gradually with T, roughly proportionally, over a wide range. In terms of the classification introduced in Author(s):
Big Data @ CSAIL In this talk, Prof. Madden will summarize recent work at MIT CSAIL in the big data area, including recent work on data management, cloud computing, algorithms, and interfaces and visualization.
4.3 Glycosylation sequences and protein glycosylation Polysachharide units on proteins may be simple or branched and are almost completely confined to those proteins destined for the cell surface or secretion. The sites and types of glycosylation are determined by the primary structure of the protein and by the availability of enzymes to carry out glycosylation (glycosyltransferases). N-linked polysaccharides are attached to the –NH2 groups of asparagine and O-linked polysaccharides are attached to the –OH groups of serine a
4.4.1 Introduction Since its development, the three-way catalyst has been exposed to the full spectrum of techniques available for the characterisation of catalytic materials. The data provided can be correlated with the results of activity tests and kinetic measurements, which provide information on the performance of the catalyst. This reveals that although the catalyst functions as a composite material, it can be divided into distinct groups of catalytic centres that provide several different types of site,
U.S. Morning Call: Clash of the titans: Loeb vs. Ackman
Jan 10 - Activist investors Dan Loeb and Bill Ackman square off on Herbalife as the company hosts its investor day.
Implementation of a computer algebra based assessment system
This article describes the design and implementation of the CABLE computer aided assessment system. Introducing a computer algebra system (CAS) to assist in marking allows instructors to design effective assessment schemes that are valid and reliable. A modular design approach allows system components, including a virtual learning environment (VLE), CAS and database, to be used for their respective strengths. Requirements for both interoperability and customisation for particular learning contex
Effects of pictures, age and experience on learning to use a computer program
This study examines the effects of pictures of screen captures and input devices on documentation for older novices. There was no main effect of pictures, but there were statistically significant interactions between the type of picture and the factors of age and computer experience. As predicted, the most optimized designsthe ones presenting screen capturesmoderated the negative effects of age. We argue that screen captures help reduce two problems in the cognitive area that are especially
Bioinformatic Insights Into Mammalian Gene Regulation: Can Keystrokes Confront Cancer?
Dr. Laura Elnitski, Head of the Genomic Functional Analysis Section, Genome Technology Branch NHGRI/NIHDr. Elnitski uses experimental and Bioinformatic methods to discover non-coding functional elements in the human genome. On 7 March 2008, Dr. Elnitski came to MSU-Bozeman to participate in the Women In Bioinformatics Seminar Series.
Classroom environment: the basics
Your classroom is "home away from home" for you and your students. Make it attractive, comfortable, and functional.
9.10 Cognitive Neuroscience (MIT)
This course explores the cognitive and neural processes that support attention, vision, language, motor control, navigation, and memory. It introduces basic neuroanatomy, functional imaging techniques, and behavioral measures of cognition, and discusses methods by which inferences about the brain bases of cognition are made. We consider evidence from patients with neurological diseases (Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, Balint's syndrome, amnesia, and focal lesions
Anthropology of Religion
This course presents a theoretical analysis of religion as a cultural phenomenon. It explores the functional relationships between religion, culture, society, and the individual.
Flash
This course familiarizes students with Macromedia Flash. Topics to be covered include fundamental programming concepts (variables, variable types, code re-use, commenting code, and basic control structures) in addition to the fundamentals of the flash environment (animation, vector graphics, use of sound and video). Students finishing this course will have at least one completed fully functional Flash project for their portfolios demonstrating a strong knowledge of the tool and a good foundation

Entrepreneurship and New Venture Creation
The objective of this course is to teach you to apply the skills you have learned in the functional areas toward the goal of starting a business, i.e., becoming an entrepreneur. Working in teams, you will learn to identify, conceptualize, plan, finance, launch, manage and harvest new ventures. Finally, intrapreneurship, the application of entrepreneurial methods of management to established organizations, will also be discussed. Class discussion, readings, case studies, guest speakers, interview
