Methods and algorithms for system design
System design is the central topic of this course. We move beyond the methods developed in circuit design (although we shall have interest in those) and consider situations in which the functional behavior of a system is the first object under consideration.

The lectures are at a beginning graduate level and assume only basic familiarity with Functional Analysis and Probability Theory. Topics covered include: Random variables in Banach spaces: Gaussian random variables, contraction principles, Kahane-Khintchine inequality, Anderson’s inequality. Stochastic ...
Open Source Earth Science Curriculum Resources
The collection contains assignments and analysis for an Open Source Earth Science course for grades 9 - 10. The Open Source Earth Science course has been organized to meet the CA Science Standards for Earth Sciences in grades 9 - 10, as adopted by the California State Board of Education.

Star Library: Which Paper Towel is More Absorbent?
This group activity focuses on conducting an experiment to determine which of two brands of paper towels are more absorbent by measuring the amount of water absorbed. A two-sample t-test can be used to analyze the data, or simple graphics and descriptive statistics can be used as an exploratory analysis. ...
Star Library: What is the Shelf Life?
The Food and Drug Administration requires pharmaceutical companies to establish a shelf life for all new drug products through a stability analysis. This is done to ensure the quality of the drug taken by an individual is within established levels. The purpose of this out-of-class project or in-class ...
The applet in this section allows for simple data analysis of univariate data. Users can either generate normal or uniform data for k samples or copy and paste data from another source to a text box. A univariate analysis is performed for all k samples.
This applet from Statistical Java allows the user to generate bivariate data for analysis with simple linear regression. The page describes the equations used to generate the data and estimate the regression lines.
Science as Investigation: A First Majors Course Teaching the Process
The first laboratory course biology majors take should challenge their expectation that biology is the mere memorization of knowledge. Rather, it should introduce them through experience to the scope and limitations of scientific investigation. Following a brief introduction to epistemology and the nature and goals of science, this course provides students with a developing understanding of scientific thinking, methodology, and experimental design. During the final unit of the course students de
Seafood Forensics: Crabby Proteins
A laboratory exercise to perform protein analysis of crab tissue using horizontal agarose gel electrophoresis to determine if species substitution has occurred.
Spot-Overlay Ames Test of Potential Mutagens
This protocol represents a cost-effective modification of the Ames Test that allows students to investigate the mutagenic potential of various common substances. Potential mutagens are tested using well-characterized auxotrophic strains of Salmonella typhimurium. By analyzing the results, students determine if any of their compounds may be mutagenic. Follow-up experiments are designed to determine the dose response of these potential mutagens. Using this protocol, we have achieved reproducible r
The Cypress Swamp
A laboratory exercise involving observing various plants and animals encountered and measuring physical factors that affect them as an approach to ecosystem analysis.
What I Could Teach Darwin Using "Darwin 2000"
A laboratory to demonstrate the use of the "Darwin 2000" website to train undergraduates to use online molecular databases and analysis tools, fostering their understanding of how genes and proteins evolve.
Therapod Fossil Hunt Dispatch
This five-part online article reports on the finding of a dromaeosaur fossil, the best specimen to date to show that feathers existed long before modern birds and flight. Part 1 includes: It All Started with Feathers, A Path Shrouded in Mystery, and International Collaboration. Part 2 has The Short Email and A Coat of Feathers. Part 3 includes: An Initial Hypothesis and Is It Authentic? The Analysis Begins. Part 4 has The Examination and Description Marathon, A Feathered What?, and Feathers, Fea
A Genetics Lab in a Very Unusual Place
This online article, from the museum's Musings newsletter for educators, looks at the fully functional Genetics Laboratory that was part of the exhibition The Genomic Revolution. It discusses: the significance of the recent sequencing of the human genome in a historical perspective the process visitors underwent during their hour-and-a-half visit to the lab, where they extracted, isolated, visualized, and sequenced their DNA the follow-up activities for visitors on the AMNH Web site.
Virtual Maths - 3D shapes, diagram, area, volume
Diagram of 3D shapes with formula for calculating area (and volume)
Society for Neuroscience : brain briefings
Brain Briefings is a series of newsletters produced by the Society for Neuroscience (SfN) and published during the academic year. Brain Briefings are aimed at a lay audience and they explain how basic neuroscience discoveries can lead to clinical applications. Archives available from 2006 to the present.
Virtual Maths - 3D shapes, area of cylinder
Interactive simulation demonstrating the formula and calculation of the area of a cylinder
Tocqueville's America is another project of the American Studies Programs at The University of Virginia. In this project we take up the task of re-contextualizing Alexis de Tocqueville's famous political and cultural analysis of American democracy. Our objective is, over time, to return that book -- arguably still one of the most influential works in political thought -- to its origins, to the America of 1831-32 . For it was on that very specific ground and at that very specific historical momen
