Simcha Applebaum was born in 1927 in the village of Malcz, Pruzhany (today in Belarussia), to a traditional Jewish family. In November 1941, Simcha and his parents, Yaakov and Rachel, and sister, Ella (Elka), were deported to Bereza Kartuska. After the murder of local Jews, they fled to the Pruzhany ghetto. In May 1942, Simcha joined the Jewish partisans and Soviet soldiers in the nearby forests. In November he returned to the ghetto with a group of friends to get some clothing and food. The G

This research was carried out to obtain a convenient route for the synthesis of [7_ 14C]-p-hydroxy benzaldehyde. Section 1 of the thesis includes a route involving intermediates with protecting groups like benzyl and methyl ethers of the phenols. The benzyl ethers afforded the product in relatively better yield. The overall synthesis involves four steps. ABSTRACT In 1979 Nicaragua, under the Sandinistas, experienced a genuine, socialist, full scale, agrarian revolution. This thesis examines whether Jeffery Paige's theory of agrarian revolutions would have been successful in predicting this revolution and ln predicting non-revolution in the neighboring country of Honduras. The thesis begins by setting Paige's theory in the tradition of radical theories of revolution. It then derives four propositions from Paige's theory which suggest the patterns
