2.2 The popularisation of ideas
In the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, the approach to medicine was vastly different from today. Health is now recognised, at least in most European countries, as a universal right, but what was it like in the past? How did social and political boundaries affect access to treatment, and what were the treatments of the day? This unit examines how Scottish healthcare institutions were influenced by these underlying social, economic, political and cultural contexts.

"The Men Who Wear My Clothes" by Vernon Scannell (poetry reading)
Recently I have acquired a few stalkers, though actually I think they're all the same guy. Anyway they all have the same shtick: "You're doing this to prove you're better than other people". You could say that about any human endeavour, such as singing a song, playing a tune on the piano or throwing a javelin. It's a prime, useful human trait to try to do things well. It's called vocation. The reason I started reading poetry is that when I listened to other readers they didn't sound right

Four days earlier, the Chinese government ordered the country's banks to increase their reserves as part of an effort to cool down its red-hot economy. But quality concerns and rapid growth aren't China's only worries. There is also the government's need to keep forging ahead on preparations for the Olympics next August in Beijing, despite criticism abou

The sizes of consecutive repeat-free codes
The notions of strongly consecutive repeat free code and weakly consecutive repeat free code were introduced by Pebody in his paper in the Journal of Combinatorial Theory Series A in 2006. This thesis aims to investigate the the maximum sizes of such codes, in particular in the case when the length is fixed and the alphabet size is large. Pebody constructs a strongly consecutive repeat free code of maximal size, which he calls the alternating code. We show that the size of an alternating code

On Plaintext-Aware Public-Key Encryption Schemes
Plaintext awareness is a property of a public-key encryption scheme intended to capture the idea that the only way to produce a valid ciphertext is to take a message and encrypt it. The idea is compelling, but the devil, as always, is in the details. The established de¯nition of plaintext awareness in the standard model is known as PA2 plaintext awareness and was introduced by Bellare and Palacio. We propose a modi¯ed de¯nition of plaintext awareness, which we call 2PA2, in which the arbitrar
