The new technology of the title is a hand-sized laboratory system developed in South Africa for teaching chemistry to Grade 11 pupils. To advance the theme of digital conservation of heritage and tie it to museums, we report on two case studies of digitising archaeological sites; the first is the remains of a typical Scottish Crannog typical of the sixth-century BC., and the second is a UNESCO protected site in the Middle East (the desert castle of Qusayr Amra, Jordan), which dates back to early 8th century. Then we relate both to our investigation into embodiment, interaction and metaphor in virtual environments.
