Looking back: when the Festival of Britain came to Nottingham
The populace of Nottinghamshire, who are old enough to remember, have been given the opportunity to contribute to an exhibition of the Festival of Britain, currently on display at the University Adult Education Centre, Shakespeare Street until 23 March 2007. The Exhibition opened with a lecture delivered by Sophie Hollinshead, Art Historian for the School of Education, who was also responsible for collating the material. Sophie said of her motivation; "It's

The Brown Decision, whose 50th Anniversary was observed in 2004, was a landmark case that ended the doctrine of separate but equal. During the observation of the anniversary, many pundits reflected on the political, social, and historical significance of Brown. This article takes a different approach in reflecting on the importance of Brown. A historical context is provided that reveals the conditions that existed in the south prior to and after the Brown Decision. The author tells the poignant
A young girl and boy are blowing bubbles indoors in front of a window. The girl wears a bow in her hair. There is a large bowl between the two children and they both hold pipes to their mouths.
This lesson is based on the book, "The Tiny Seed", by Eric Carle. This story will be used to introduce the children to the concept that seeds change and grow into plants when conditions in the environment including temperature, light, water and soil are appropriate. Children will learn that plants produce seeds that can become new plants. Through extended activities, the children will experience first-hand the germination of seeds. They will become familiar with the parts of a plant and learn ho
This lesson plan extends student learning about the colonial period in North Carolina Social Sciences by incorporating primary sources from the Documenting the American South collection. After reading first-hand accounts of travelers to colonial America, students will create their own travel brochure advertising North Carolina.
Patient is a 58-year-old white male with a history of acoustic neuroma that was resected in 1990. He has residual cranial nerve palsies on the right side and experiences tremors, ataxia and disequilibrium. His wife reports that she has noticed an increase in right hand tremor for the past year or so. The tremor worsens as the day progresses and occurs with activity. Patient reports an increase in balance problems while standing over the past 4 months. He has noticed that he staggers a step or t
This 46-year-old African American male presented with progressive weakness of the lower extremities for three months. He had increasing difficulty with walking and balance and now is unable to walk without assistance. He also complained of numbness and "pins and needles" sensation in the upper extremities with clumsiness and decreased dexterity in his right hand. He did not have neck or radicular pain and had no bowel or bladder problems or sexual dysfunction, but did have some urinary urgency.

Patient's speech is difficult to understand; loss of balance (fell off a truck); occasional choking spells, especially if he eats fast; bladder urgency; and slight impairment of memory. The patient returns for a follow-up with his wife. Since the last visit, he reports no significant changes. His speech is unchanged. Balance is the same with occasional falling. He has occasional choking spells, especially if he eats fast. He continues to have bladder urgency and an occasional accident, but he a
This collection of activities and lesson plans covers grade levels 7-12, with notes on how some of the plans might be adapted for other age groups. Topics fall mainly within tectonics, with some structural geology and planetary science projects. The PDF files include activities, hand outs, maps, and even directions for building a simple seismometer and seismograph. Also included are suggestions for incorporating specific media, such as video, into the classroom, and an essay on the state of K-12
Students use a JAVA interface design to explore the Daisy World model. The model is intended to illustrate a mechanism by which biota might optimize their abiotic environment by means of negative feedback. The model does not attempt to describe all of the possible mechanisms and feedbacks which might influence the ways in which the plants and climate develop. Instead, it is an heuristic model, that seeks to describe the ways in which this mechanism might work. The original model was developed by
This activity challenges students to think about angles as geometric shapes and to find the sizes of the angles between their fingers. It is part of the Figure This! collection of 80 online mathematical challenges emphasizing real world uses of mathematics. For this challenge, the students trace a hand stretched to form an L-shape with the thumb and sketches angles of 90 degrees and 45 degrees between the thumb and index finger. They use the sketches to estimate the angles between their other fi
