Grand Army of the Republic Encampment at Princeton, Indiana
The Grand Army of the Republic was an organization of Civil War veterans who had served in the Union Army. The G.A.R. had significant political clout nationwide. Between 1868–1908, no Republican was nominated to the presidency without G.A.R. endorsement. Located in Hammond, at I-80/94 and Kennedy Avenue, a major thoroughfare in Northern Indiana, the Welcome Center houses an exhibit hall and the John Dillinger Museum. The restored Theodore Roosevelt Memorial is now open at the American Museum of Natural History. At the center of the hall, a new bronze sculpture of Theodore Roosevelt, depicted as he looked during a famous 1903 camping trip to Yosemite with naturalist John Muir, invites visitors to sit next to TR and contemplate his pioneering role in conservation and the vital importance of protecting nature today.
